EQ Brings Back The Iconic Chalet Restaurant For A Limited-Time Return

One of Kuala Lumpur’s best-known dining institutions returns this August.

Few restaurants have left quite the same impression on Kuala Lumpur’s dining scene as Chalet. Opened in 1974 at the original Hotel Equatorial Kuala Lumpur, it became known for its refined European cuisine, attentive service and the kind of tableside rituals that have become increasingly rare.

More than 50 years later, the restaurant returns in the form of a limited-time pop-up at EQ, running from 13 to 31 August. While the setting may have changed, the revival looks to preserve many of the elements that defined the original experience.

Swiss Classics

The menu revisits a number of Chalet’s signature Swiss and European dishes. Salade César is prepared tableside in the traditional manner, while Raclette Traditionnelle reflects the restaurant’s Swiss heritage with melted raclette served alongside baby potatoes and cornichons. Main courses include Lobster Thermidor and Canard à la Presse, the latter prepared for two using a traditional duck press.

Desserts continue the emphasis on classic European dining. Crêpes Suzette and Cerises Jubilé are finished with their familiar flambé, while Sabayon du Chalet—remembered by many regulars as the restaurant’s “dancing dessert”—also returns.

Celebratory Dining

The revival extends beyond the menu. Throughout the residency, the CNJ Trio will perform a selection of evergreen classics, recreating an atmosphere familiar to those who dined at Chalet during its original run while introducing it to a new audience.

The programme concludes on 31 August with a Merdeka Day Brunch featuring a semi-buffet centred on Chalet favourites, marking the final day of the pop-up.

Rather than attempting to recreate the past in its entirety, Chalet’s return offers a reminder of a different era of dining—one where polished service, classic European cooking and unhurried meals were central to the experience. For longtime patrons, it is likely to evoke familiar memories; for newer diners, it provides an opportunity to experience a restaurant that occupies a distinctive place in Kuala Lumpur’s culinary history.
