Deepavali 2026: Where To Experience The Festival Of Lights In Kuala Lumpur

Five shopping destinations offer their own interpretations of the Festival of Lights.

Across Kuala Lumpur, Deepavali is finding expression beyond its traditional celebrations, with shopping malls drawing on India’s rich artistic and cultural heritage to create elaborate festive installations.

This year, the displays take inspiration from an eclectic range of influences, including South Indian culinary traditions, the palaces of Rajasthan, botanical motifs and the symbolism of the saree. Together, they offer a glimpse into the craftsmanship, customs and creative traditions associated with the festival.

Here are five malls worth visiting this Deepavali.

Pavilion Damansara Heights: Deepavali In Bloom

Nature provides the inspiration for Deepavali in Bloom at Pavilion Damansara Heights, where an elaborate botanical installation brings a floral interpretation to the Festival of Lights. Cascading flowers, peacock motifs, golden accents and rangoli-inspired patterns transform the mall’s main entrance into a colourful celebration of Indian decorative traditions.

The festivities extend to pop-up markets offering handcrafted gifts, traditional treats and seasonal finds, alongside complimentary henna painting. From 6 to 8 November, family-oriented activities and appearances by characters from popular children’s shows add to the programme, bringing together experiences for different generations.

Pavilion Bukit Jalil: Joyful Lights – Together, Here

Indian textiles and traditional craftsmanship shape the Deepavali celebrations at Pavilion Bukit Jalil, where a series of installations explores the festival’s artistic heritage.

A highlight is The Saree of 1,080 Blessings, created in collaboration with UCSI Group. Inspired by the sacred significance of the number 108 in Hindu tradition, the flowing textile installation represents collective blessings and celebration.

Elsewhere, illuminated elephants flank the Spanish Steps, while kolam displays created by students from City University Malaysia and City Fashion School reinterpret traditional patterns in a contemporary setting. Indian semi-classical and fusion dance performances on 7 and 8 November complete the cultural programme.

The Gardens Mall: A Celebration Of South Indian Culinary Heritage

At The Gardens Mall, an elaborate kolam takes its inspiration from the traditional South Indian banana leaf meal. Reimagined as a circular mandala, the installation celebrates the role of food in family gatherings and the rituals of hospitality.

Real spices, cooking utensils and intricate food details bring the composition to life, while suspended dried chillies and spice pots turn familiar kitchen ingredients into decorative elements. It is an unusual interpretation of Deepavali that places culinary heritage at the heart of the celebration.

Visitors can also explore miniature clay food art and chai masala blending through hands-on workshops, while performances featuring Semi-Classical, Semi-Odissi and Oyilattam dance traditions offer another perspective on South Indian culture.

Pavilion Kuala Lumpur: Journey Of Radiance

The palaces of Rajasthan provide a visual starting point for Journey of Radiance at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, where royal Indian architecture meets the festive symbolism of Deepavali.

Ceremonial parasols, ornate elephants and peacocks greet visitors at the main entrance, while colourful haveli façades and jharokha windows frame a rangoli walkway. Cascading marigolds and lanterns inspired by traditional diyas bring further colour to the Spanish Steps.

The celebration also explores the relationship between heritage and contemporary expression. At its launch, Fashion in Motion: Reimagined Saree Runway saw 30 Malaysian designers reinterpret the traditional saree through modern silhouettes, embroidery and creative draping. Classical and folk dance performances on 7 and 9 November, including Kathak, Odissi and Kathakali, continue the exploration of India’s artistic traditions.

The Exchange TRX: Divinity Of Deepavali

The peacock and lotus are the defining motifs of Divinity of Deepavali at The Exchange TRX, drawing on their associations with beauty, grace, purity and renewal.

Both feature in the mall’s festive installation, where traditional symbolism is expressed through contemporary decorative design. Rather than focusing on architectural grandeur or elaborate craftsmanship, the display takes a more symbolic approach to the Festival of Lights.

Indian performing arts are another focus, with weekend and public holiday performances at Urban Node featuring Bharatanatyam-inspired fusion, Odissi, Kathak, Oyilattam and Peacock Dance. Held at 2pm and 5pm, the programme introduces visitors to a range of classical and folk traditions.
