BMW Spills the Beans on its Consistency in Creating Great Car Design

BMW Malaysia officially introduced the new G80 M3 and G82 M4 in the country back in December last year in an online campaign. Back then, it stated that both vehicles are set to arrive here in Competition form.

Lo and behold, the cars have finally made landfall in our neck of the woods with the BMW M3 Competition sporting an SST exempted price tag of RM 639,664, while its even more gorgeous two-door sibling, the M4 Competition Coupé, now retails at RM659,357.

But even more fascinating to us was the literature that accompanied the material announcing the availability of the said Beemers…

This is actually BMW’s recipe book for consistently producing such gorgeous wheels as the two Competition siblings mentioned above… and here, we’d like to share this with you!

  1. Precision: Tape Drawings

BMW MalaysiaAlongside the sketches, the designers draw their plans on a wall with a 1:1 scale in, what is known as, tape drawings. Here, they stick the proportions of the vehicle onto a base plan using flexible tape. Base plans are a kind of map of the future vehicle with all technical and structural features.  In tape drawing, not only the Malaysia character but the real volume can be recognized with a few striking lines, providing the perfect template for the next steps. “When you start the tape drawing, you immediately see the car much more clearly in your mind,” Thøgersen explained. “What began as an idea and a concept in the sketches, now gets a concrete meaning.”
