BMW Malaysia unveils locally built flagship X7 xDrive40i

Expect a better deal for luxury automaker’s SUV

Looks like the flagship SUV in the X-range of BMW, the X7, is finally being assembled in Malaysia. First launched here back in the second half of 2019, this luxurious seven-seater is available in the xDrive40i form in this market and is expected to be priced from MYR708,000. To begin with, that’s already a hefty price reduction of around MYR153,000 from the earlier, fully-imported CBU model with the extended warranty and service package.

The vehicle is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine, which produces a maximum power of 250kW/340hp, and a peak torque of 450Nm. The engine is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and crosses the 0-100km/h mark in 6.1 seconds, all the way to a top speed of 245km/h.

The X7 comes with the Design Pure Excellence package as standard, with generous amounts of chrome applied on the exterior, complemented by the same 21-inch Y-spoke style 753 bicolour alloy wheels. For a comfortable ride, the 2.3-tonne SUV retains the two-axle air suspension system with five different height settings over a range of 80mm.

There’s also the Executive Drive Pro package with active anti-roll stabilisation – a first for an X model – which works with the Dynamic Damper Control that processes data from the navigation system and front camera. There’s also the very clever Integral Active Steering, or BMW’s rear-wheel steering system.

Throughout the three rows of seats, Vernasca leather is standard. The cabin also sports Fineline Stripe wood trim, a dashboard covered in Sensatec synthetic leather, a head-up display, ventilated front seats, five-zone climate control, electric blinds for the rear side windows and BMW’s illuminated Sky Lounge panorama glass roof.

There’re also adaptive BMW Laserlight headlamps with high-beam assistant, LED fog lamps, the BMW Display Key, anti-dazzle wing/rear view mirrors, Comfort Access with handsfree tailgate opening, soft-closing doors, electric rear side window sunblinds, BMW Connected Package Professional, BMW Live Cockpit Professional with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, and Parking Assistant Plus with Reversing Assist and an around-view monitor.

Malaysian owners will also get the BMW Navigation system Professional with a 12.3-inch central touchscreen and BMW Operating System 7.0, wireless charging and gesture control. A Harman Kardon surround sound system with 464 watts of output and 16 speakers delivers the driving tunes, while second row passengers also have the convenience of two 10.2-inch touchscreens to tinker with.

Meanwhile, on the safety front, the CKD X7 now comes with the Driving Assistant package that includes front collision warning with brake intervention (AEB), Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Warning and there’s still Active Cruise Control with stop and go function.

Available now in a choice of Black Sapphire, Sophisto Grey, Phytonic Blue, Mineral White and Manhattan Green hues (sadly, the earlier imported model’s Terra Brown and Vermont Bronze colours are no longer offered), every BMW X7 xDrive40i Design Pure Excellence comes with a five-year/unlimited-mileage warranty and a free scheduled service programme, along with other services like roadside assistance and accident hotline, the BMW Group Loyalty+ mobile app with privileges card, and BMW Service Online for complete peace of mind.
