VELLO Debuts Folding E-Bike With A Powered Motor

The Austrian bicycle maker has introduced a new generation of folding e-bikes built around Bosch’s latest drive technology.

Folding bicycles have long involved compromise. Portability often comes at the expense of ride quality, while electric assistance can add weight and complexity. Austrian bicycle maker VELLO believes recent advances in drivetrain technology may help narrow that gap.

The company has unveiled the VIA+, a new range of electric folding bicycles built around Bosch’s recently introduced HubLine drive system. The launch marks one of the first integrations of the technology into a folding bike, a category that has traditionally faced challenges balancing performance, weight and practicality.

Designed and manufactured in Europe, the VIA+ range combines the compact dimensions of a folding bicycle with features more commonly associated with full-sized e-bikes.

A New Approach to Folding Mobility

At the centre of the VIA+ is the Bosch HubLine motor, delivering up to 45Nm of torque and 400W of peak power. The system is paired with a suite of sensors, including an integrated incline sensor that adjusts assistance according to terrain.

Bosch says the technology has been developed to provide power more naturally across varying riding conditions while improving energy efficiency. The removable battery can also be supplemented with an optional second unit, bringing total capacity to 500Wh.

The system integrates with the Bosch eBike Flow App, offering navigation, security features and ride data, while a USB-C charging port allows riders to power smartphones and other devices while travelling.

Engineering Beyond the Commute

A defining characteristic of the VIA+ is VELLO’s patented diamond-frame design, which eliminates the need for a folding hinge in the main frame. The approach is intended to preserve structural rigidity while allowing the bicycle to fold down quickly for storage and transport.

The frame itself is constructed from double-butted Columbus CroMo steel tubing, a material often associated with performance-oriented bicycles. Weighing from 16.5kg depending on specification, the VIA+ also incorporates hydraulic Shimano disc brakes and an integrated Supernova lighting system.

Notably, VELLO describes the bike as the world’s only mountain bike-certified folding bicycle, highlighting a growing shift in the category towards greater versatility beyond urban commuting.

Two Distinct Models

VELLO VIA+ Foldable

The VELLO VIA+ range launches with two variants designed for different riding preferences.

The VIA+ Tour features a Shimano Deore 10-speed drivetrain, making it suitable for longer journeys and varied terrain, while the VIA+ Urban takes a different approach, replacing a traditional chain with a Gates Carbon Drive belt system and a two-speed internal gear hub. The latter setup prioritises simplicity and reduced maintenance, qualities that continue to appeal to city riders.

VELLO VIA+

The launch comes at a time when bicycle manufacturers are increasingly responding to demand for mobility solutions that fit seamlessly into urban life. As cities continue to invest in cycling infrastructure and consumers look for alternatives to car ownership, folding e-bikes are evolving from niche products into a more established segment of the market.
