For a brand built around the freedom of the open ocean, Explora Journeys is about to take a decidedly narrower course.
The luxury cruise line has signed a Letter of Intent with Dutch shipbuilder Den Breejen Shipyard for its first fleet of luxury river ships, marking its planned entry into river cruising. Further details on design, onboard experiences, delivery schedules and itineraries are expected in due course, with sales planned to open in 2027.
The move also places Explora in a part of the cruise market increasingly suited to travellers looking beyond the scale and spectacle traditionally associated with ocean cruising. Europe’s rivers offer something different: smaller vessels, closer access to cities and landscapes, and journeys in which the destination can be as much a part of the experience as the ship itself.
From Ocean To River

Since its arrival in 2023 with EXPLORA I, followed by EXPLORA II in 2024 and EXPLORA III in 2026, Explora Journeys has positioned itself around a more residential interpretation of cruising. Its ships emphasise generous suites, outdoor space, multiple dining destinations, wellness and a sense of unhurried discovery, underpinned by what the brand calls its ‘Ocean State of Mind’.
That proposition has been deliberately distinct from the conventional cruise experience. Explora’s itineraries combine familiar destinations with lesser-travelled ports, while the ships themselves draw on the language of contemporary European hospitality rather than traditional nautical grandeur.
Its move into river cruising suggests that the philosophy is less tied to the ocean than the name might imply.
A More Intimate Kind Of Luxury

River cruising presents an intriguing extension of that approach. On Europe’s major waterways, the journey unfolds at a slower pace, with vineyards, historic towns and cultural landmarks forming part of the immediate landscape rather than distant port calls.
For Explora, the challenge will be translating its emphasis on space and resort-style amenities to a fundamentally different scale. Yet that may also be where the opportunity lies.
As luxury travel increasingly moves towards meaningful access, slower itineraries and a stronger sense of place, river cruising offers an inherently intimate proposition. Explora’s planned fleet arrives at a moment when the river is no longer simply an alternative route through Europe, but a new canvas for luxury hospitality.
The ocean may have been Explora’s starting point. Its next chapter could be defined by the river.
