What happens when a suitcase stops being designed to carry clothes?
For RIMOWA and Faber-Castell, the answer is an artist’s case: a limited-edition aluminium object designed to carry the tools of creativity instead. The collaboration brings together two German houses with long histories of craftsmanship, resulting in a case that treats drawing equipment with the same consideration usually reserved for fine luggage.
Crafted at RIMOWA’s historic Cologne factory, the RIMOWA x Faber-Castell Artist Case uses the maison’s anodised aluminium in silver, paired with the signature leather handle associated with its Classic collection. Like RIMOWA’s luggage, the material is intended to age with use, developing a patina that gradually records its owner’s journeys.
Strokes Of Creativity
Inside, the case is less luggage than a carefully organised creative workstation. Its two-level tray system opens into a custom display, keeping the contents visible and within reach while giving the collection the feel of an instrument cabinet.
At its centre are 120 Polychromos colour pencils, Faber-Castell’s oil-based pencils known for their high pigment concentration and smooth application. They are joined by co-branded grooved 2B graphite pencils developed with RIMOWA, covering the transition from early sketches and composition to finished colour work.
The details continue down to the accessories: a RIMOWA-branded platinum-plated sharpener and eraser complete the set, turning what might ordinarily be a collection of individual tools into a single, considered object.
Dual Celebration
The collaboration arrives as Faber-Castell marks its 265th anniversary. Founded in 1761, the ninth-generation family-owned company has spent more than two centuries making instruments for drawing and writing. RIMOWA, meanwhile, has increasingly explored the relationship between travel, design and cultural expression beyond its core luggage collections.
The resulting case occupies an interesting space between utility and display. It can live open in a studio as an organised drawing station, or close up and travel with its owner — extending RIMOWA’s familiar idea of mobility into the creative process itself.
