P. Ramlee Reimagined: St. Regis Unveils A Cinematic Dining Experience

Bringing Malaysia’s beloved cinematic legacy from screen to table in an immersive four-night dining experience.

Some of Malaysia’s most enduring cinematic memories were made in black and white. This Merdeka and Malaysia Day season, The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur gives them a new setting – and a rather more immersive one with the legend of P. Ramlee.

Malam Gala Malaysiaku: The P. Ramlee Premiere transforms The Brasserie into an elegant stage for the work of Tan Sri P. Ramlee, bringing together cinema, gastronomy, music and storytelling in an experience that moves fluidly between screen and table.

Rather than attempting to recreate the world of P. Ramlee’s films, the evening approaches his legacy through the moments audiences remember. Across seven courses, each dish takes the name of an iconic film and draws inspiration from a particular scene, character or detail.

The evening unfolds almost like a live performance. A clip is screened before each course, after which the Pencerita – the evening’s storyteller – introduces a “Stage Direction”. Guests might be invited to recite a familiar phrase from Laksamana Do Re Mi, make a choice inspired by Pendekar Bujang Lapok or discover a hidden element drawn from Nujum Pak Belalang. Only then does the next culinary chapter arrive.

A Premiere In Full Colour

The menu, meanwhile, gives familiar Malaysian flavours a more contemporary expression. Executive Sous Chef Mohd Sakhawi Azizi leads the culinary interpretation, with dishes ranging from smoked chicken karipap with confit potato and curry espuma to coral lobster with torch-ginger sambal and nasi lemuni. The intention is less about reproducing the food of P. Ramlee’s films than capturing their spirit through taste, texture and presentation.

Music forms another layer of the experience, with live musicians performing selections from P. Ramlee’s repertoire throughout the evening. It creates a soundtrack that connects the cinematic memories on screen with the atmosphere around the table.

There is also an opportunity to encounter the man behind the mythology. Presented in collaboration with the P. Ramlee Memorial House and Arkib Negara Malaysia, a curated display of artefacts and archival material will offer glimpses into his life and career, including his A.M.N. medal, films and books.

For generations of Malaysians, P. Ramlee’s films and songs have become part of the country’s shared cultural vocabulary – quoted, sung and rediscovered long after their original release. Malam Gala Malaysiaku taps into that collective memory without simply looking backwards. Instead, it offers a new way to experience a familiar legacy, turning cinema into something tactile, social and distinctly of the moment.
