The Langham Breathes New Life Into One Of Bangkok’s Most Storied Landmarks

The luxury property welcome its first guests this December, combining heritage architecture with contemporary luxury in one of the city’s most anticipated hotel openings.

Few cities embrace the dialogue between old and new quite like Bangkok. Along the banks of the Chao Phraya River, gilded temples stand beside contemporary towers, while centuries-old trading houses continue to shape the city’s cultural landscape. Soon, another landmark will begin its next chapter.

The Langham, Custom House, Bangkok is now accepting reservations ahead of its opening on 20 December, marking one of the Thai capital’s most anticipated luxury hotel debuts. More than simply introducing another five-star address, the property restores one of Bangkok’s most historically significant buildings, transforming the former Custom House into a riverside retreat that honours its past while embracing contemporary hospitality.

A Landmark Reimagined

Built in 1888 during the reign of King Rama V, the riverside Custom House once served as Thailand’s principal gateway to international trade, welcoming merchants and travellers arriving from around the world. Today, after a meticulous restoration, the heritage building becomes the heart of a 75-key luxury hotel managed by Langham Hospitality Group.

Rather than recreating the past, the development celebrates it. Designed by acclaimed Thai architect Smith Obayawat, the new accommodation wing sits alongside the restored landmark in a graceful, curvilinear form inspired by the movement of the Chao Phraya River.

The architect has described the relationship as one between “grandfather” and “grandson”—a contemporary structure that respectfully complements its historic neighbour rather than competing with it.

The hotel’s 60 guestrooms and 15 suites continue that conversation between heritage and modernity. Interiors blend natural materials, warm lighting and subtle Siamese influences, while sculptural bathtubs, geometric detailing and bespoke lighting draw inspiration from the artistry and symbolism of King Rama V’s era.

A New Chapter Along The Chao Phraya

The restored Custom House itself will become a vibrant public destination, housing future dining and lifestyle venues that invite both guests and locals to experience the landmark in a new way. Elsewhere, a Chuan Spa and a Technogym fitness centre featuring the brand’s luxury Sandstone collection—the first in Asia—reinforce the property’s wellness offering.

Its location in Bang Rak also places guests within easy reach of Bangkok‘s most dynamic neighbourhoods, from Chinatown and Charoen Krung to ICONSIAM and Asiatique The Riverfront. Private river excursions and chauffeured Bentley transfers further underscore the hotel’s personalised approach to luxury.

As heritage buildings across Asia find renewed purpose through thoughtful restoration, The Langham, Custom House, Bangkok represents more than a new hotel opening. It demonstrates how preserving architectural legacy can create richer, more meaningful hospitality experiences—allowing one of Bangkok’s historic gateways to once again welcome the world, this time as one of the city’s most distinctive luxury addresses.
