How The Shoppes At Marina Bay Sands Is Redefining Luxury Retail

Hazel Chan, Senior Vice President of Retail at Marina Bay Sands, discusses how first-to-market boutiques, immersive experiences and a carefully curated dining portfolio are redefining luxury retail.

The Shoppes Marina Bay Sands

Last year, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands marked a year of landmark openings and boutique transformations, underscoring its commitment to a carefully curated luxury experience. The mall welcomed a host of first-to-market concepts, including Italian luxury shoemaker Rene Caovilla, high-end Chinese jeweller Laopu Gold, and South Korean eyewear label Gentle Monster, alongside contemporary lifestyle brand ALO, solidifying its reputation as a destination for discerning shoppers.

THE NEW LUXURY LANDSCAPE

CHANEL’s temporary boutique is inspired by Mademoiselle Chanel’s Parisian apartment at 31 Rue Cambon.

“The transformation at The Shoppes is guided by a broader shift towards experiential luxury,” says Hazel Chan, Senior Vice President, Retail at Marina Bay Sands. “Customers today want to be understood and seek out pieces that reflect their personal identity, values and lifestyles. Rather than amplifying scale, we have focused on greater exclusivity, deeper personalisation and differentiated experiences.”

Rene Caovilla’s first boutique in Southeast Asia exemplifies this vision. Known for its jewel-encrusted sandals and iconic snake motifs, the boutique offers a bespoke shopping experience, including a selection from the Spring-Summer 2026 collection. Similarly, Laopu Gold opened its first boutique outside China, showcasing traditional Chinese gold craftsmanship and culturally significant decorative pieces.

The Shoppes also enhanced its retail landscape through expansions and flagship launches. Gentle Monster unveiled a duplex flagship, featuring the striking GIANT HEAD KINETIC OBJECT installation, while Bacha Coffee and local contemporary label Beyond The Vines expanded their footprints. Established brands, including CHANEL, BOSS, Montblanc, Penhaligon’s and Davidoff of Geneva, refreshed interiors, further elevating the mall’s luxury credentials.

Birkenstock introduced its ‘Urban Birch Forest’ concept store, creating an immersive retail environment that reflected the brand’s philosophy of grounded living. Across these openings, The Shoppes has carefully balanced commercial appeal with a cohesive luxury aesthetic, making it a destination where global and regional firsts coexist seamlessly.

IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES

Beyond the physicality of boutiques, The Shoppes has prioritised experiential luxury. In recent years, immersive retail concepts have become central to the mall’s strategy, offering shoppers environments that are emotionally resonant and uniquely memorable.

“Immersive concepts are integral to how shoppers perceive luxury today,” says Chan. “Through considered design, curated soundscapes and bespoke services, our newest boutiques offer distinct luxury cues that feel intimate yet familiar, illustrating how storytelling and design elevate the retail journey.”

“By integrating retail with dining and hospitality, we create a seamless end-to-end journey that transforms shopping into a destination experience” – Hazel Chan

This approach is evident in flagship stores such as CHANEL, which unveiled a 900-square-metre boutique dedicated to Ready-to-Wear, bags, shoes, costume jewellery and eyewear. The design reflects a dialogue between heritage and modern elegance, punctuated with the brand’s signature black, white and beige palette accented with gold. Montblanc’s flagship reimagined its NEO 4.0 concept to showcase its craftsmanship, including interactive writing stations and a VIP room celebrating local Peranakan heritage.

The mall has also complemented these immersive experiences with personalised programmes. Its Discover The Shoppes recognition platform and by-invitation Personal Shopping Service offer high-touch engagement across more than 80 brands. Salon Privés, a new initiative, provides by-appointment-only spaces for top-tier Very Important Clients (VICs), complete with private previews and one-of-a-kind pieces.

“These initiatives allow us to orchestrate a seamless convergence between retail, hospitality and entertainment,” Chan explains. “We aim to create experiences that linger long after our guests leave, reinforcing The Shoppes’ position as Singapore’s premier luxury destination.”

DINING AS DESTINATION

Bacha Coffee brings its century-old legacy of fine Arabica brews to The Shoppes.

Luxury at The Shoppes extends beyond fashion and accessories into a carefully curated gastronomic landscape. In 2025, the integrated resort refreshed a number of its dining concepts, merging culinary innovation with immersive design.

CÉ LA VI Singapore, celebrating its 15th anniversary, unveiled a transformation that married Southeast Asian craftsmanship with contemporary elegance. The main dining space features a mirror-stretched ceiling, bamboo pillars and a dramatic onyx stone bar framed by sculptural wooden columns.

Private dining rooms showcase botanical wallpaper and brass accents, while open-air options allow diners to enjoy views of Marina Bay. Signature dishes such as A4 Miyazaki Beef Tataki and Black Truffle “Sushi Rice” Okayu complement inventive cocktails like The Silent Gold and Midnight in Jalisco.

HEYTEA encourages shoppers to indulge in modern tea culture with inventive flavors and a contemporary flair.

Café nesuto opened its second outlet along the waterfront promenade, offering both indoor and alfresco seating, along with outlet-exclusive dishes including Chocolate Banana Crumble Tart and Pandan Coconut Kaya Butter French Toast. HEYTEA introduced its first “one-store-one-design” flagship in Singapore, merging industrial design with a playful approach to tea culture. Meanwhile, Rasapura Masters blended gastronomy and technology through a 3D digital landscape wall and curated food stalls, including Michelin-recognised favourites.

“By integrating retail with dining and hospitality, we create a seamless end-to-end journey that transforms shopping into a destination experience,” Chan notes. “This is something e-commerce simply cannot replicate.”

FUTURE HORIZONS

The line-up of olfactory experiences welcomed Penhaligon’s new concept.

Looking ahead, The Shoppes is preparing for further expansion, with new first-in-market boutiques such as Abel Richard’s Asia debut and Arc’teryx’s Singapore flagship recently opening their doors. Existing brands, including Lululemon and The Whisky Distillery, are also expanding to enhance the mall’s lifestyle offering.

“Our focus remains on introducing first-to-market concepts and exclusive experiences that highlight craftsmanship and storytelling,” Chan says. “We apply a selective approach, prioritising boutique concepts capable of elevating brand experiences beyond standard formats.”

Sustainability is a growing consideration in both tenant selection and operations. The Shoppes has partnered with retailers on initiatives such as WWF’s Earth Hour and the national Go Green SG movement. Operationally, the mall has implemented food waste segregation across F&B tenants and digital tracking for non-food retailers, embedding measurable impact into daily operations.

Beyond environmental responsibility, success is measured through guest engagement and affinity rather than traditional KPIs alone. She emphasises, “We monitor feedback, the depth of brand partnerships, and engagement touchpoints within our recognition and personal shopping programmes. Strong shopper affinity and interest from brands seeking exclusive activations validate our investment in experiential retail.”

The strategic role of retail is set to expand further within Marina Bay Sands’ upcoming ultra-luxury development, where boutique experiences will complement hospitality and entertainment offerings, driving incremental spend and reinforcing the property’s global lifestyle positioning.

“Luxury is increasingly about access, community and personalisation rather than mere acquisition,” Chan concludes. “By orchestrating a thoughtful, integrated experience, The Shoppes continues to lead Singapore’s luxury retail landscape, blending craft, creativity and curation in ways that resonate deeply with our guests.”
