There is a great sense of optimism every time a new year rolls around, and 2022 is no different. Even though events of recent years have been filled with uncertainties as to what the future holds, what we know for sure and what we can celebrate are some of the milestones of the past. Let’s take a look at some icons turning 100 in 2022!

The BBC
The British Broadcasting Company was founded on October 8, 1922 and started airing daily radio broadcasts out of a London studio.
Time Inc
Time Inc was founded by Henry Luce in 1922 and published its first issue of Time in March 1923, and went on to create other iconic magazines such as Fortune, Life, Sports Illustrated, Entertainment Weekly, People and InStyle.
Maidenform
In 1922, a type of undergarment for women featuring two cups separated by a piece of elastic was created. Dress shop owners Ida and William Rosenthal along with Enid Bissett designed and called it the “Maiden Form Brassiere” which lifted and shaped the bust. Originally built into dresses, it was later created separately to be worn with other dresses.

Jaguar
100 years ago, William Walmsley and William Lyons founded the Swallow Sidecar Company which would later become known as Jaguar.
The Blender
In 1922, Steven Poplawski patented the first blender which featured its trademark spinning blade at the bottom of a container.
The Radial Arm Saw
To cut costs, increase productivity and make woodworking jobs less labour-intensive, Raymond DeWalt created a number of inventions including the Radial Arm Saw, originally known as the DeWalt Wonder-Worker in 1922.
The Transatlantic Fax
In 1922, the Radio Corporation of America offered the first transatlantic fax service, mainly used by newspapers for transmitting photographs, and the weather services for sending weather maps.
Nosferatu
Long before Twilight, there was Nosferatu, an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula premiered as the world’s first vampire film in Berlin in 1922. One if the silent era’s most influential masterpieces, its eerie gothic feel set the template for horror films to follow.
The Velveteen Rabbit
Written by Margery Williams and illustrated by William Nicholson, one of the most cherished children’s books of all time was published in 1922. The original version is still in print for today’s kids to fall in love with.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Published 90 years before the film adaptation starring Brad Pitt, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s satirical short story about ageing first appeared in Collier’s Magazine in May 1922. Fitzgerald then went on to write The Great Gatsby, one of the most-read books in literary history.
King Tut’s Tomb
His tomb in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt wasn’t discovered until 1922. Many burial chambers and treasures that had been left untouched for 3000 years were also discovered in the months that followed.
Stan Lee
The beloved creator of the Marvel Comics universe was born in 1922. He gave the world Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, Black Panther, The Avengers, as well as the X-Men. Sadly, Stan passed away in 2018.
Judy Garland
This popular icon was born in Minnesota in 1922 as Frances Ethel Gumm. She became famous in The Wizard of Oz, Meet Me in St Louis and A Star Is Born. She spent most of her career as a singer though and died from an accidental overdose in 1969.
Charles Schulz
Charles gave the world Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the whole Peanuts gang. He produced 18,000 comic strips over his 50-year career. Born in November 1922, he passed on in February 2000, the night before his final Peanuts cartoon was published.
Betty White
If you are a Golden Girls fan, you’re sure to recognise Betty who played the role of Rose. She collected five Emmys and holds the Guinness World Record for Longest TV Career for a female entertainer. She would have turned 100 in 2022 but sadly passed away just a few weeks before her big birthday.
Doris Day
Another legend in showbusiness, Doris was born in April 1922 and passed away at 97 years of age in 2019. She was a singer, actress and animal welfare activist. Some of her popular songs include Que Sera Sera, Dream A Little Dream of Me and Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps.

Ava Gardner
Ava was the epitome of old-school Hollywood glamour, widely recognised as one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood history. Born in 1922, married three times to Frank Sinatra, Artie Shaw and Mickey Rooney, she passed away in 1990.
