To mark it’s fifth anniversary, local fine drinks importer Wholly Spirits – essentially the key people behind the outstanding Gin Jubilee 2019 that was celebrated across Kuala Lumpur – presents a unique exclusive collaboration with independent Scottish bottler, That Boutique-y Whisky Company. The latter is well-known as a multi award-winning independent bottler of exceptional and unconventional whiskies, to say the least.

Happily, the result is the Malaysia Skyline Series of specially selected single cask whiskies, and the first bottling presented under this series is, in fact, a highly sought-after ‘unicorn whisky’ – a 19-year-old single malt Scotch from Springbank Distillery that has been fully matured in a sherry butt and bottled at 50.2% ABV.
Understandably, the two proud Malaysians behind Wholly Spirits – Shawn Samuel and JB Ooi – are quite chuffed about the whole affair. “Malts from Springbank Distillery have a huge global cult following, but it’s very rare to see one that is fully matured in a sherry butt. It’s a true unicorn whisky, especially for avid whisky collectors!” says Samuel.
“This whisky is testament to the high standards we’ve set for the Skyline Series. We want to ensure that each whisky in this series has to be of exceptional quality, and also unique in its own right,” Ooi adds.
Here’s the thing, though: a very limited quantity of 500ml bottles of this unique Scotch have been released, numbering only 231 full bottles available in Malaysia. If you miss out on the full bottles, however, fret not, as the company has also produced a more substantial number of 50ml miniatures, which is just perfect for those who want to sample this unicorn whisky.
Both the collectors and generous gifters amongst us will also be pleased to note that each bottle of the Skyline Series Vol 1 comes with a specially designed label using That Boutique-y Whisky Company’s signature whimsical hand-illustrated style – featuring Kuala Lumpur’s one-of-a-kind skyline, as well as Malaysian icons such as the Petronas Twin Towers, the orangutan and the Bunga Raya.

As part of Wholly Spirits’ philosophy of supporting local bartenders and artisans, it has also worked with other Malaysian partners to design a custom-made box that houses a full 500ml bottle of the whisky, as well as two 50ml miniatures.
