What’s in a Muji hotel? Impressions from the Shenzhen branch

We visit the new hotel in Shenzhen to experience the Japanese brand’s “anti-cheap”, “anti-gorgeous” concept.

When Muji announced plans to open an eponymous hotel in Shenzhen, fans of the brand were eager to see its minimalist cozy aesthetic put into practice in a true hospitality setting.

I walk past wispy greens and creeping foliage framed against reclaimed wood walls from traditional Chinese homes, take the lift up to the 5th floor, and find my unit. The “ship” turns out to be a wooden fishing boat, installed as a statement piece in the huge courtyard of the hotel. As with the other decor pieces in the hotel, it evokes a sense of curiosity, but also leaves me a little confused.
