A touch of Hollywood glamour is set to arrive when international boutique hotel chain The Standard opens its Singapore outpost on November 28 after a year-long delay.
The Standard, which is known for its unconventional approach to hospitality targeted at the edgy and design-savvy crowd, is also famed for being associated with celebrities. Its hotels in the United States and London have served as the backdrop for numerous Hollywood movies and television series, including Sex and The City, Entourage, Gossip Girl and Killing Eve.
The 143-key The Standard Singapore sits on Orange Grove Road in the serene residential enclave of Orchard Road, next to the Shangri-La Singapore, and on a small plot of land that used to be occupied by a serviced apartment building. The eight-storey hotel is owned by Indonesia-based real estate investment company, Invictus Developments.
Designed by The Standard International’s in-house team in collaboration with Singapore-based interior design firm Ministry of Design, the rooms feature numerous curvy elements in the form of wooden deck ceiling that sprawls over the bed and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows.
Heading to the bathrooms look set to be a cheerful affair with sunshine-yellow tiled walls and groovy mirrors and lighting fixtures. There will be eight types of rooms, from cosy single pool view to the suite spot pool view. Rooms will be available for reservation from December 15.
In the heart of the hotel sits a garden with a two-storey deck and art installations and sculptures and a swimming pool with an in-built bar.
The hotel is also home to three food and beverage concepts including Kaya, a modern izakaya restaurant that serves nigiri, maki rolls and robatayaki accompanied by an extensive sake and whisky list. An extension of the restaurant is the Kaya Bar, which will serve innovative cocktails. At the ground lobby level is Café Standard, a bistro that serves American classic dishes with natural wines and craft beers.
The Standard is also known for curating fun and offbeat arts and culture activities for its guests. They include games such as Not Your Standard Bingo, cocktail pop-ups and dance parties. The programme line-up for The Standard Singapore is still in the works.
The New York-headquartered Standard International, which runs brands such as The Standard, The StandardX, The Peri, Bunkhouse Hotels and The Manner, was acquired by Hyatt Hotels in August.
Amar Lalvani, Executive Vice President of The Standard and Creative Director, Lifestyle at Hyatt, highlighted Singapore’s cultural dynamism as a key factor in the decision to expand to the city-state. “Singapore is fast becoming a global commercial and creative hub, making it the perfect fit for The Standard. We’re excited to introduce our unique brand of hospitality to such an exciting and evolving market,” he says.
The upcoming Singapore launch marks The Standard’s fifth location in the Asia-Pacific region, which is also in New York, London and Ibiza. Its other locations in Asia include Bangkok and Hua Hin. Up next, The StandardX opens in Bangkok on November 15, and The Standard Pattaya is slated to launch in the first quarter of 2025.
