Opening its doors on December 1, this community-focused retreat boasts 10 luxuriously appointed tents, each named after a hill tribe, offering an exclusive blend of cultural activities, exquisite culinary delights, and fully appointed luxury accommodations.
The tents, perched on raised platforms in the serene hill country setting, range from 48 to 80 sqm, featuring spacious verandas that capture the breathtaking surroundings. With categories like “Akha”, “Yao”, Lahu”, and “Lisu”, guests can choose accommodations tailored to their preferences, including two-bedroom options suitable for families.

Beyond the opulent interiors, Visama Mae Chan pampers guests with a range of amenities, including air conditioning, espresso machines, rain showers, and 24-hour concierge service. Each detail is carefully curated to ensure a luxurious and comfortable stay.
The heart of this retreat lies in its diverse activities, blending cultural experiences with nature immersion. From pottery and painting to foraging and private picnics, guests can craft their personalised itinerary. Cooking classes featuring Lanna-Thai recipes, spa and wellness sessions, and private trips to heritage attractions like the opium museum and the White Temple in Chiang Rai promise an unforgettable stay.
A resort highlight will also be The Ambalama, a fireside gathering place for storytelling and talks by authors and historians.
At the heart of the dining experience is Reu Doo Gaan, the resort’s restaurant, offering a menu crafted by chef Suphannat ‘Miu’ Amnuayrit. The culinary team blends traditional Lanna cuisine with nutrition-rich international comfort foods, using locally sourced organic produce from the adjacent farm.

Visama Mae Chan’s commitment extends beyond providing a luxurious escape. The property supports the Friends of Thai Daughters foundation, aiming to prevent child trafficking and empower girls from hill tribe communities. The foundation is registered in the United States as a not-for-profit, and was created by its current directors, Patty Zinkowski and Jane McBride.
“We are grateful that Visama Mae Chan will provide sustainable income for the foundation and employment opportunities for some of our girls. We look forward to a long and productive partnership with Visama,” they expressed in a released statement.
The foundation will benefit from the resort’s sustainable initiatives, including a monthly farmers’ market and tree planting activities.
Christopher Stafford, co-founder of the lodge, emphasises their dedication to providing direct income, vocational training, and sustainability benefits to the local community. With a successful track record in operating award-winning retreats, including the renowned 137 Pillars Hotel in Chiang Mai, the team behind Visama Mae Chan ensures a holistic experience that blends nature, culture, and community engagement.
