Kimpton Kota Kinabalu Announced: IHG Expands Luxury Lifestyle Hotels in Malaysia

A design-led, 350-key retreat on Tanjung Aru Beach will mark the second Kimpton property in the country

Kimpton Kota Kinabalu

IHG Hotels & Resorts has announced the signing of Kimpton Kota Kinabalu, a 350-key, design-led beachfront retreat set along the renowned Tanjung Aru Beach. Developed in partnership with Pekah Beach Resorts Sdn Bhd, the property is slated to open in 2031.

Positioned on Sabah’s coastline, the hotel will offer direct access to the beach alongside sweeping views of the South China Sea and Mount Kinabalu. Public spaces and programming are set to celebrate the region’s rich cultural identity, from music and art to local cuisine.

A human-first approach to coastal luxury

True to Kimpton’s globally recognised philosophy, the property will centre on personalised, human-first hospitality paired with bold, design-forward interiors. Guests can expect vibrant social spaces, curated dining and bar concepts, and wellness offerings that reflect both global standards and local sensibilities.

The hotel is also envisioned as a social hub for the community — a place where travellers and locals alike can gather for sunset cocktails, creative showcases and immersive experiences that connect them to Sabah’s natural landscapes and cultural heritage.

Strengthening Malaysia’s luxury lifestyle portfolio

According to IHG, the signing represents a significant step in expanding its luxury and lifestyle footprint across Malaysia.

Bryan Chan, Vice President, Development, South East Asia & Korea at IHG Hotels & Resorts, noted that the group is set to triple its luxury and lifestyle portfolio in the country in the coming years. He highlighted Kimpton Kota Kinabalu as a key milestone following the recent debut of Kimpton Naluria Kuala Lumpur, located in the Tun Razak Exchange.

With Sabah continuing to grow as a sought-after destination, Kota Kinabalu is increasingly positioned as a gateway to both nature and high-end travel experiences.

Claire Tan, Director of Pekah Beach Resorts Sdn Bhd, added that the project will introduce the first beachfront luxury lifestyle hotel at Tanjung Aru, combining thoughtful hospitality with authentic social connection rooted in the destination.

Kimpton Kota Kinabalu will feature an all-day dining restaurant, a beach club and a speciality dining venue, alongside leisure facilities including swimming pools, a pool bar, and fitness and wellness spaces.

For events and gatherings, the property will offer flexible function rooms and a dedicated lounge designed for relaxed entertainment.

A growing global presence

The Kimpton brand continues to expand worldwide, with more than 80 hotels currently open and over 60 in development. In Southeast Asia, several properties are already welcoming guests, with additional openings in the pipeline — including Kimpton Suntaya Bali Ubud, set to mark the brand’s debut in Indonesia.

As IHG builds on the presence of InterContinental, Kimpton and Hotel Indigo in Malaysia, upcoming introductions such as Regent and Vignette Collection are expected to further strengthen its position in the country’s evolving luxury hospitality landscape.
