Active Escapes: New Zealand’s Open Invitation To Uncover Adventure

Explore the country’s stunning landscapes while immersing in wellness, adventure, and Māori heritage.
New Zealand Active Escapes

Alpine vistas and turquoise lakes: New Zealand’s trails are framed by nature at its most breathtaking.

In a world increasingly drawn to journeys that restore as much as they exhilarate, New Zealand is redefining what it means to travel well. Here, movement is not just a means to an end; the experience itself is an opportunity to reconnect with nature, culture, and self through some of the most remarkable landscapes on Earth.

This is the foundation of Tourism New Zealand’s Active Escapes campaign. Across Aotearoa, travellers are invited to run, walk, hike, and cycle through wild coastlines, ancient forests, volcanic valleys, and alpine peaks. Whether it’s a dawn run along the Pacific, a vineyard cycle framed by distant mountains, or a contemplative walk-through moss-draped rainforest, each journey unfolds at a deeply personal pace.

With global appetite for wellness-led, nature-based travel at an all-time high, New Zealand stands apart not only for its scenery but for the seamless blend of adventure, restoration, and cultural depth.

THE NEW LUXURY: PURPOSEFUL TRAVEL

From sunrise runs to quiet evening walks, every trail offers space, silence and perspective.

Luxury today is defined less by excess and more by intention. According to the Virtuoso Luxe Report 2024, 94% of travellers now integrate wellness and activity into their journeys, while 77% prioritise transformative experiences over cost. For Millennials and Gen Z, the journey itself — be it hiking, cycling, or walking — is as important as the destination.

New Zealand meets this demand with an unparalleled network of trails: over 1,555 walking and hiking tracks, 11 Great Walks, and 23 Great Rides. These routes reveal not only spectacular landscapes but also cultural stories, from Māori heritage and ancestral pathways to pioneering coastal settlements and renowned food and wine regions.

Travellers can set their own pace. Gentle lakeside loops and coastal paths suit leisurely exploration, while half-day hikes, vineyard trails, and forest tracks offer a balance of challenge and reward. For seasoned adventurers, multi-day treks and technical races deliver moments of true achievement in landscapes that feel wonderfully untouched.

WORLD-CLASS RUNNING CALENDAR

Hawke’s Bay Marathon: finish among vineyards, local food and award-winning wines.

For those drawn to organised events, New Zealand’s running calendar offers compelling reasons to plan around movement. Designed for elite athletes, passionate amateurs, and curious first timers alike, each race promises something extraordinary.

The ASICS Hawke’s Bay Marathon (May 2026) winds through vineyards, orchards, and coastal paths before finishing at the iconic Elephant Hill Estate & Winery, where a Finish Line Festival of live music, local food, and award-winning wines captures New Zealand’s relaxed sophistication.

Race Tekapo (September 2026) offers alpine drama beside Lake Tekapo, framed by snow-dusted peaks and the renowned International Dark Sky Reserve. Seven race distances cater to all levels, with hot pools, stargazing, and crisp mountain air providing restorative moments after exertion.

The First Light Marathon in Tairāwhiti Gisborne (January 2027) is a truly unique experience. Set in the first city in the world to greet the sunrise, the coastal course traces Māori land, historic sites, rolling hills, and chardonnay country, culminating in a sunrise that leaves a lasting impression.

BEYOND THE TRAIL

Every active escape is an opportunity to reconnect — with land, culture, and self.

What elevates Active Escapes is what happens between and after movement. Recovery is integral: travellers can soak in geothermal hot pools, savour nourishing local cuisine, explore world-class wineries, or connect with Māori cultural experiences. In Tekapo, stargazing beneath pristine skies becomes a meditative ritual, while forest bathing and coastal walks restore calm and balance.

Guided experiences offer cultural and ecological insight, while independent travellers enjoy the freedom of well-signposted, maintained tracks. Whether solo, with friends, or as a multigenerational family, the experience feels effortless yet deeply considered.

A JOURNEY TO YOUR BEST SELF

In New Zealand, active travel is never about ticking boxes or chasing extremes. It is about presence and finding clarity in motion, calm in vastness, and meaning in the simple act of moving through extraordinary places.

Every trail invites reconnection with land, culture, and self. Here, luxury is measured in space, silence, and authenticity; adventure is balanced by restoration; and each journey gently leads you toward your own sense of 100%. You just need to find the trail that moves you.
