Padel has come a long way from being a relatively niche racquet sport. Combining the competitive intensity of tennis with a more accessible, social format, it has attracted a growing following worldwide, along with the attention of major luxury and lifestyle brands.

International luxury brands have increasingly recognised padel’s appeal as both a competitive sport and a platform for connecting with a new generation of enthusiasts. Its rapid expansion in recent years has also helped establish the sport as part of a wider lifestyle movement.

In Malaysia, that momentum is becoming increasingly visible. What began as a recreational activity among smaller groups of enthusiasts has developed into a growing community of players, clubs and competitive tournaments.

Among the events reflecting this evolution is the Volvo Padel Open, which returned for its third edition from 23 to 25 October 2026 at Joy Division Padel in Petaling Jaya.

From Social Sport To Competitive Community

First introduced in 2024, the Volvo Padel Open has evolved alongside Malaysia’s expanding padel scene. This year’s edition introduced a new club-versus-club format, bringing together more than 600 players representing eight Klang Valley-based padel communities.

Participating clubs included All’Bout Padel, Baby Buaya Posse, Jerung Padel Club, Kelab Padel Pop x ABBT, Padé x LGK, Padel Hood, Padel Pushers x APC and Wolfpack Padel.

Competing for RM137,200 worth of prizes and community honours, players were divided into five skill tiers across men’s and women’s categories: Low Bronze, High Bronze, Low Silver, Mid Silver and Gold.

The expanded structure allowed recreational players and more experienced competitors to face opponents of comparable abilities, creating a more inclusive tournament without compromising its competitive character.

More significantly, the club-based format shifted the emphasis beyond individual performance. By bringing established communities together, the tournament reinforced the camaraderie and collective identity that have contributed to padel’s growing popularity.

Sanctioned by the Selangor Padel Association, the event also provided a platform for players to gain competitive experience and develop their skills, helping bridge the gap between recreational participation and organised sport.

Where Sport Meets Lifestyle

For Volvo Car Malaysia, the tournament represents an opportunity to engage with a sporting community whose interests extend beyond the court.

Patricia Yaw, Marketing Operations and Public Relations Director of Volvo Car Malaysia, highlighted the connection between padel’s community-driven nature and the automotive brand’s human-centric philosophy.

“The tournament underscores Volvo’s commitment to fostering local grassroots sports culture while mirroring the technological innovation behind a fully electric future,” she said.

Throughout the three-day event, Volvo’s electric vehicle range was displayed at the venue, with visitors also offered opportunities to experience the vehicles through test drives.

The presence of an automotive brand at a padel tournament reflects a broader commercial trend. As the sport attracts younger, socially active audiences, it is increasingly becoming a meeting point for lifestyle, sporting culture and brand engagement.

Yet beyond the commercial partnerships, padel’s appeal remains rooted in its accessibility. Played in doubles, the sport encourages interaction, teamwork and a sense of community, qualities that have helped sustain its popularity among newcomers and seasoned players alike.

With its expanded competitive format and strong club participation, the Volvo Padel Open 2026 offered a glimpse of how Malaysia’s padel scene is maturing. As more players move from casual games towards organised competition, tournaments such as this could play an increasingly important role in shaping the sport’s next chapter.
