Thompson Hotels has officially landed in Asia. Hyatt Hotels Corporation unveils Thompson Shanghai Expo, the brand’s first outpost in the region.
Set within the revitalised World Expo district, this striking new address mirrors Shanghai’s restless energy – where business, art, and innovation converge.
A Cultural Home Base by the River

Thompson Shanghai Expo channels the brand’s New York heritage – urban, creative, and effortlessly cool. Here, Shanghai’s cosmopolitan rhythm meets Thompson’s signature cultural flair.
The hotel houses 254 sleek rooms and suites, bold event spaces, and three dining and nightlife concepts, including a rooftop club with panoramic views of the Huangpu River.
Its setting within Expo Place, a vibrant riverfront complex of art, retail, and leisure, keeps guests close to major landmarks – like the Mercedes-Benz Arena, China Art Museum, and Shanghai Expo Culture Park.
“Shanghai feels like the right place, at the right moment,” says Amar Lalvani, Hyatt’s President and Creative Director for the Lifestyle group. “It’s alive, creative, and incredibly dynamic.”
Design Inspired by the Pavilions of the Future

The design tells a story of transformation – from industrial grounds to creative powerhouse. Architects GP Architects New York and interior designers SilverFox Studios (Singapore) reimagine the spirit of the Expo 2010 pavilions. The curved glass façade catches the river’s shimmer, while interiors play with light, texture, and contrast.
Exposed steel meets warm wood. Concrete softens under velvet. Vintage details nod to Shanghai’s layered past—balancing industrial grit with polished elegance.
Rooms That Feel Residential, Not Hotel-Like

Inside the 254 rooms, guests find a modern sanctuary with floor-to-ceiling windows, hardwood floors, and custom furnishings.
Touches of art inspired by the Expo pavilions add local flavour. Each marble bathroom feels like a mini spa, while thoughtful extras – Dyson hairdryers, coffee machines, curated playlists – make every stay personal.
Dining, Nightlife, and Shanghai Soul

Thompson Shanghai Expo redefines the city’s social scene through three dynamic venues. At BAOBAO Lounge, guests mingle over steamed bites, craft brews, and local infusions in a relaxed indoor-outdoor space.
On the 19th floor, Fishermen’s Pavilion celebrates Yangtze River Delta cuisine—reimagined by local chefs. Expect refined seafood dishes, private dining rooms, and sweeping skyline views.
Above it all, the 20th-floor TOTS rooftop sets the night’s rhythm. With its bar, open-air cabanas, and live DJ sets, it’s Shanghai’s new golden-hour destination.
Crafted Experiences and Local Collaboration
True to Thompson’s DNA, experiences extend beyond the stay. Guests can join local artists for creative workshops, or run along the EXPO riverside with Shanghai’s running collectives.
At night, Clink & Connect brings travellers together over cocktails at TOTS. Every Saturday, Beats & Connect transforms BAOBAO Lounge into a casual, music-driven social club.
A New Chapter for Thompson in Asia

With its debut in Shanghai, Thompson Hotels plants its flag firmly in Asia Pacific. It’s more than a hotel—it’s a statement of cultural confidence. Here, in the heart of the World Expo district, Thompson Shanghai Expo captures the pulse of a city that never stops reinventing itself.
