The Malaysian General Election date is said to be set as early as 5th November 2022.
The question on everyone’s mind is, When will the General election take place?
Malaysia’s 15th General Election is scheduled to be held by the 9th of December 2022. All 222 seats for the Dewan Rakyat will have to be filled.
The exact date will be set by the Election Commission, which is scheduled to meet next Thursday (20th October 2022) to decide the matter. Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah has urged the commission to hold polls as soon as possible, given that the annual monsoon rains that cause widespread flooding usually begin in mid-November and continue until March.
The 14th Parliament was due to expire on the 16th of July 2023, five years after the last election. An election was not due until September 2023, but Former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri had been under pressure due to an ongoing political crisis that began in early 2020. Political instability is caused by members of parliament switching parties or coalitions.
The 14th Parliament of Malaysia was dissolved on 10 October 2022, during a special televised address by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, following an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah a day prior, whereby he provided consent for the dissolution. The election is to be held within 60 days, which means our election date must be set by 9th December 2022.
Last week, Former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri’s government tabled the 2023 national budget of RM372.3 billion (US$80.06 billion), which is the biggest budget yet in Malaysia’s history.
