The Nautilus At 50: Patek Philippe Refines Its Emblematic Icon

Four limited editions mark a half-century of the brand’s most disruptive design

At Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026, Patek Philippe marks 50 years of the Nautilus—a design that once upended convention and now defines it. Rather than reinterpreting the icon through complication, the maison returns to first principles: form, proportion and mechanical restraint. The result is a quartet of limited editions that underscore the Nautilus at its most distilled, led by ultra-thin execution and a renewed emphasis on purity.

Nautilus 5810/1G-001 & 5810G-001: The Jumbo, Refined

The twin Patek Philippe Nautilus 5810 references anchor the anniversary offering. Both housed in 41mm white gold cases, they revisit the “Jumbo” format with a disciplined, time-only display—hours and minutes, and nothing more.

At just 6.9mm thick, the case feels almost improbably slender, a quality made possible by the ultra-thin self-winding calibre 240. The architecture remains faithful to the original 1976 construction, its porthole-inspired form expressed through alternating satin-brushed and polished surfaces.

Where they diverge is in tone. The bracelet version leans into classicism, its blue sunburst dial paired with white gold markers and hands. The composite-strap variant introduces a contemporary note, its dial elevated with baguette-cut diamond hour markers—subtle, but unmistakably opulent. Both are limited, respectively, to 2,000 and 1,000 pieces.

Nautilus 5610/1P-001: Platinum Restraint

The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5610/1P-001 offers a more compact, quietly assertive alternative. At 38mm, it revisits the “medium” Nautilus format, a nod to earlier references from the 1980s, while maintaining the same pared-back hours-and-minutes display.

Rendered in platinum, it carries the maison’s discreet signature: a diamond set into the case at nine o’clock. The proportions remain elegantly slim, matched by a blue sunburst dial with horizontal embossing—arguably the purest expression of the Nautilus aesthetic.

Inside, the calibre 240 continues its work, visible through a sapphire caseback, its 22K gold micro-rotor engraved for the anniversary. Limited to 2,000 pieces, it is perhaps the most understated of the four—yet no less significant.

Nautilus Desk Watch 958G-001: A Radical Translation

The most unexpected addition arrives in the form of the Patek Philippe Nautilus 958G-001—a desk watch that translates the Nautilus into an entirely new context. Crafted in white gold and measuring over 50mm, it retains the collection’s defining codes, from its rounded octagonal bezel to its horizontally embossed dial.

Yet it is the mechanics that set it apart. Powered by the manually wound calibre 31-505 8J PS IRM CI J, the piece delivers an eight-day power reserve, complete with day, date and small seconds indications. A hinged caseback reveals the movement, while also functioning as a stand—an elegant fusion of utility and design.

Limited to just 100 pieces, it feels both playful and deeply considered, echoing the disruptive spirit of the original 1976 model.

50 years on, the Nautilus remains a study in balance—between sport and elegance, innovation and continuity. With these anniversary editions, Patek Philippe resists excess, choosing instead to refine what was always there. The message is clear: true icons do not require reinvention, only clarity.
