The highlight of Tan Jianci’s visit took place in the canton of Jura, where Rado welcomed its Global Brand Ambassador behind the scenes of its high-tech ceramic laboratories. The exclusive tour provided an in-depth look at the meticulous production process that transforms ultra-pure zirconium oxide powder into the lightweight, highly scratch-resistant material synonymous with the brand.
During the visit, Tan followed every stage of production, from injection moulding and sintering at temperatures reaching 1,450°C to the precision polishing that gives Rado’s high-tech ceramic its signature finish. He also witnessed the brand’s specialized plasma process, where ceramic components undergo treatment at temperatures of up to 20,000°C to achieve a distinctive metallic appearance without using metal.
The experience offered a rare glimpse into the innovation that has positioned Rado at the forefront of material science within Swiss watchmaking.

Beyond observing the manufacturing process, Tan participated in a series of interactive demonstrations that showcased the unique properties of high-tech ceramic.
He compared the material’s lightness against steel and tungsten, tested its scratch resistance using specialized tools, and discovered how quickly high-tech ceramic adapts to body temperature compared with traditional metals. “I’ve always felt Rado’s watch designs were iconic, but this visit took things to a new level,” he said. “It helped me understand exactly why it’s known as the Master of Materials—there’s nothing like seeing the process behind high-tech ceramic with your own eyes.”
