Now everyone knows that super-luxury brand Hermes is undoubtedly one of the most covetable in the world. But why? Find out at On the Wings of Hermes, a poetic and cinematic performance opening on July 19 at the Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Centre. Running until July 28, this captivating show will transport audiences into a whimsical universe, highlighting the maison’s raison d’etre and commitment to exquisite French craftsmanship.
Directed by the Belgian duo Jaco Van Dormael and choreographer Michele Anne De Mey, in collaboration with the Astragales dance company, the performance is an invitation to explore an ethereal world where dreams take flight.
Hermes artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas explains, “This work metaphorically illustrates the lightness that is omnipresent at Hermes: in the delicate hands of our craftspeople sewing with two needles at once, in the elegance of materials, and in the subtle notes of a perfume. It is an experience which sparks the imagination, designed by the artisans of dreams.”
Set in a space reminiscent of a film studio, the performance unfolds through seven sketches, each revealing the fable of Pegasus and his seven foals. Audiences will be treated to a blend of dance, object theatre, music, and cinema, showcasing Hermes objects as graceful puppets in a choreography of twirling hands. Highlights include a mini circus, a humorous opera featuring Hermes Kelly bags, and a lyrical sequence of interlacing gloves.
Captured in real time by Van Dormael, these scenes are projected onto a giant screen, enhancing the magical experience. After successful runs in Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, this world tour will be landing in Singapore, promising an immersive sensory experience that reflects Hermes’ playful and lighthearted spirit.
Founded in 1837, Hermes has maintained its dedication to craftsmanship and humanist values. The brand’s pursuit of beautiful materials, innovation, and excellence in savoir-faire is evident in its 60 workshops in France and its network of 294 stores worldwide. Led by CEO Axel Dumas, a sixth-generation family member, Hermes continues to create timeless objects, employing 22,000 people globally, including nearly 7,000 craftsmen in France.
The Fondation d’entreprise Hermes, established in 2008, further underscores the brand’s commitment to artistic creation, training, biodiversity, and environmental preservation. Visitors to On the Wings of Hermes will also have the opportunity to view a 35-minute film inspired by the performance, extending this poetic journey into the realms of imagination and craftsmanship.
