G-SHOCK’s Most Expensive Watch Costs Over RM320,000. Here’s Why

Featuring a blue sapphire crystal bezel, a specially engineered shock-resistant structure and a worldwide production run of just 20 pieces.

A G-SHOCK watch costing US$80,000 (approximately RM327,000) is not what most people would expect from a brand synonymous with rugged, everyday timekeeping. Yet Casio is pushing the boundaries of its flagship MR-G collection with the MRG-D5000, a limited-edition timepiece that places advanced materials and precision engineering at the centre of its appeal.

Limited to just 20 pieces worldwide, the watch takes the familiar square G-SHOCK silhouette into considerably more rarefied territory. Its defining feature is a bezel made entirely from blue sapphire crystal, a material prized in watchmaking for its exceptional hardness and resistance to scratches. The challenge, however, is making sapphire work in a watch designed to withstand impact.

Engineering Toughness Into Sapphire

Sapphire crystal is hard, but it can be vulnerable to cracking under sudden force. For a brand whose identity rests on shock resistance, incorporating the material into the MRG-D5000 required more than an aesthetic rethink.

Casio’s solution is its proprietary MR-G Multi-Guard Structure, which uses multiple separate components to construct the bezel and case. The screwless design is intended to eliminate the pressure points that conventional screws can create in sapphire crystal, while the structure has been engineered to manage the forces transmitted through the watch during impact.

The result is a different expression of G-SHOCK’s enduring design principle: protecting the watch through considered construction rather than relying on toughness as a visual statement alone.

Blue sapphire crystal also features in the screw-lock case back, engraved with an individual serial number identifying each of the 20 watches. Inside, Gallium Tough Solar technology provides light-powered charging, bringing the model’s technical credentials beyond its exterior.

A Different Expression Of G-SHOCK

Since its introduction in 1996, the MR-G collection has explored the intersection of G-SHOCK’s durability and more refined materials, finishing and craftsmanship. The MRG-D5000 extends that approach into a category where material innovation and specialist manufacturing help define a watch’s identity.

It is not the only new model in Casio’s blue-sapphire series. The MRG-B5000SA features two-carat, facet-cut blue sapphire crystals on the top and bottom of its case, alongside a super-hard alloy bezel and blue arc ion plating. The full-metal GMW-B5000SB takes a more restrained approach, with blue sapphire stones set at four points on the front of its bezel.

The MRG-D5000, however, makes the most striking statement. Its price places it far removed from the accessible, utilitarian image that helped establish G-SHOCK, while its construction remains rooted in the brand’s original pursuit of shock resistance.

At RM327,000, the question is not simply how much sapphire a watch can accommodate. It is how far a familiar design can be taken when the material itself becomes an engineering challenge — and when toughness is expected to coexist with the demands of high-end watchmaking.
