Musical theatre has a way of bringing people together. Familiar melodies, soaring vocals and the sweep of a live orchestra can transform an evening into something that stays with an audience long after the final note.
That was the spirit of Brand New Day: A Symphonic Broadway Celebration, presented by HSBC Malaysia for an invited audience, including HSBC Premier Elite customers, at the Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre (JCPAC) in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur. The event brought together more than 100 performers for a concert celebrating the enduring appeal of Broadway and musical theatre.

Over the course of a performance, the audience was taken through a repertoire spanning some of the genre’s best-loved productions, from The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables to Dreamgirls and West Side Story. The music moved between grand theatrical numbers and more intimate moments, drawing on the emotional range that has made these productions enduring favourites across generations.
The evening featured performers including Sean Ghazi and Stephen Rahman-Hughes, whose experience in musical theatre brought depth and familiarity to the material. They were joined by a wider cast of vocalists and dancers, accompanied by the 73-piece TUTAN Festival Orchestra under the direction of conductor Kevin Field.

The result was a production on a considerable scale, with the live orchestral arrangements providing a richer dimension to the music. With the auditorium packed, the evening also offered a reminder of the communal appeal of live performance: the pleasure of experiencing familiar songs in a shared setting, rather than through a screen or recording.
Beyond The Everyday

For HSBC, the concert reflects a broader approach to engaging its affluent clientele through experiences that extend beyond conventional banking services. As expectations around luxury evolve, access to culture, the arts, travel and wellness increasingly forms part of how people choose to spend their time and connect with others.
Through HSBC Premier, the bank brings together four pillars — Wealth, Health, Travel and International — reflecting the different priorities of customers whose lives and interests often extend across borders. Cultural experiences such as Brand New Day offer another way to bring these dimensions together, creating opportunities for customers to enjoy meaningful occasions with family, friends and their wider communities.

“Witnessing the performing arts, it is an invaluable experience, one that is made even more special in the presence of family, friends and other loved ones,” said Linda Yip, Country Head of International Wealth and Premier Banking, HSBC Malaysia. “And that in a way becomes part of our legacy, because just like wealth, our interests, such as the love for music, arts and culture, gets passed down to the next generation.”

Her observation points to a more personal understanding of legacy. While financial planning is concerned with what is built and passed on, shared experiences can shape family traditions and interests in ways that are less tangible but no less lasting.
The appeal of such occasions also lies in their ability to bring people together around a common interest. An evening of musical theatre offers a different kind of connection — one shaped by performance, emotion and the collective experience of an audience.
A Cultural Stage For Selangor

The choice of JCPAC adds another dimension to the partnership. Developed by Sunway Group and opened in August 2026, the venue is part of the wider cultural and lifestyle ecosystem taking shape in Bandar Sunway. With a capacity of approximately 1,200 and facilities designed to host local, regional and international productions, it provides a new platform for the performing arts in Selangor.
For Selangor, the development of venues such as JCPAC forms part of a broader cultural landscape that can complement the state’s economic growth. HSBC’s collaboration with JCPAC positions the bank within this developing ecosystem.

As its first banking partner, HSBC is supporting a venue that aims to bring a varied programme of performances to Malaysian audiences. The partnership also reflects a shared interest in creating experiences that connect people with culture in an accessible and memorable setting.

“We are honoured to partner with the Sunway Group, in bringing events of international calibre to Malaysian audiences,” added Yip. “We are thrilled to play a part in the exciting lineup of shows that will be taking place in this world class venue in the near future.”
For HSBC, the relationship extends the idea of international banking beyond financial services alone. Its Travel and International propositions speak to customers who move between markets and cultures; partnerships with cultural venues offer a complementary way to engage with the places and communities in which they live and work.
The Value Of A Shared Experience

Ultimately, the appeal of Brand New Day lay in the performance itself. The scale of the orchestra, the energy of the cast and the familiarity of the repertoire gave the evening its momentum, while the packed auditorium underscored the enduring draw of musical theatre.
For an audience gathered to enjoy an evening away from the everyday, the experience was about more than the individual numbers. It was about the atmosphere of a live performance and the opportunity to share it with others.

That is where cultural experiences find their lasting value. They create memories through moments that cannot quite be replicated elsewhere — a voice rising above an orchestra, a familiar melody heard anew, or the collective response of an audience at the end of a performance.
With Brand New Day, HSBC brings this idea into its approach to client engagement, using music and the performing arts to create occasions that resonate beyond the evening itself. And as JCPAC establishes its place on Malaysia’s cultural calendar, the partnership points towards a growing role for shared experiences in the way luxury is understood and enjoyed.
