To bring a multi-faceted sensorial experience of the Double Cask collection to life, the luxury single malt scotch whisky distillery, The Macallan, has collaborated with acclaimed artist and photographer, Erik Madigan Heck.
For this unique collaboration, each whisky variant in the Double Cask collection is captured through the lens of Heck’s unique and signature style inspired by classic, Flemish still life paintings of the 17th century. Beautifully balanced, The Macallan Double Cask Collection is a complex sip vatted from European and American Oak, all sherry seasoned in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain.
Through his expert eye for colour, texture and light, Heck has captured the tasting notes of every single malt. These abstract photographs are telling a different story, while also a true celebration of nature, the importance of wood and The Macallan ultimate sensorial experience.
In the photograph of Wood, Heck showcases the beautiful balance of European Oak and American Oak with red pantones and blue hues. He visually depicts A Sensorial Journey in his artistic representation of the whisky’s foundational rich, fruity, full-bodied flavour experience at The Macallan barley fields.
Captured by the duck pond, The Macallan Estate is an encapsulation of the complex yet delicate process of creating The Macallan Double Cask. It is a visual reflection of an ecosystem that is rooted in flavour, aroma and natural color.
The Macallan Double Cask Collection
The Macallan Double Cask 12 Year Old marries the classic Macallan style and the unmistakable sweetness of American oak. Harmoniously united, this distinctive single malt is specially created from the Oloroso sherry-seasoned American and European oak casks, to finish with a sweeter, warmer taste and character. Looking closely, subtle hints of vanilla can be seen with the two-tone purple chiffon fabric, along with creamy butterscotch and newly felled oak.
After maturing for 15 years, The Macallan Double Cask 15 Year Old is a balanced single malt whisky created by bringing the perfect harmony of two oaks into one exceptional single malt whisky. Sherry-seasoned American oak adds delicate vanilla to the subtle spice of European oak, delivering a fantastic character. The baked apples take centre stage in the visual, which is reminiscent of the great Flemish still-life paintings.
Furthermore, The Macallan Double Cask 18 Year Old stands proud as a marker of extraordinary craftsmanship with the key flavour notes of treacle toffee, sweet ginger, dried fruits and nutmeg. Long with warm oak and citrus, it is a perfectly balanced single malt whisky matured for 18 years in both American and European sherry-seasoned oak casks. Heck has depicted it using plush gold velvet to bind the image, while nodding to the whisky’s harmonious balance of flavour and long, warm finish.
Lastly, the Double Cask 30 Year Old has matured for 30 years in a harmonious union. Displaying a natural golden acorn hue, the single malt imparts various aromas of fresh honeycomb, sweet toffee, red apple, fig and vanilla pod.
