Glenfiddich And Aston Martin Unveil A 28-Year-Old Single Malt

The latest collaboration explores the influence of different oak casks on a limited-edition single malt, with packaging inspired by the automaker’s design language.

Luxury automotive collaborations have become familiar territory for whisky makers, often bringing together established names through shared associations with craftsmanship and heritage. Glenfiddich’s latest release with Aston Martin, however, offers a more tangible point of interest: the influence of different oak casks on a 28-year-old single malt.

Created by Glenfiddich Malt Master Brian Kinsman, the limited-edition Glenfiddich 28 Years Old combines several maturation styles, with American and European oak contributing different characteristics to the final expression.

Exploring The Influence Of Oak

At the heart of the whisky is a combination of cask influences, with virgin American oak playing a particularly prominent role.

Whisky initially matured in American oak undergoes secondary maturation in virgin oak, introducing spice and vanilla sweetness. European oak Oloroso sherry-seasoned hogsheads contribute richness and texture, while traditional ex-bourbon casks bring the orchard fruit notes associated with Glenfiddich.

The use of highly active casks presents an interesting challenge. While they can introduce greater intensity and complexity, their influence must be carefully managed to avoid overwhelming the whisky’s underlying character.

For Kinsman, the objective was to explore these different layers of oak influence while preserving the distillery’s recognisable flavour profile. The resulting expression reflects an approach to maturation in which the interaction between wood and spirit is as significant as the time spent in the cask.

A Connection Across Decades

The whisky’s origins also coincide with an important period in Aston Martin’s history. When the spirit was laid down in the late 1990s, the British carmaker was developing Project Vantage, the concept that would eventually form the basis of the Aston Martin Vanquish. The introduction of the V12-powered DB7 Vantage further marked a shift towards a new generation of high-performance grand tourers.

That automotive connection extends to the whisky’s presentation. Developed in collaboration with Aston Martin’s design team, the packaging features flowing forms intended to suggest movement, alongside Podium Green, copper detailing and Glenfiddich’s signature stag emblem.

The design incorporates elements of Aston Martin’s visual identity, extending the association beyond the collaboration’s name.

Glenfiddich 28 Years Old will be available from January 2027 through selected international airport retailers.
