A new chapter in Kuala Lumpur’s Japanese dining scene unfolds with the arrival of the IPPUDO | MAiSEN combined concept at Bangsar Shopping Centre. Following its debut at The Gardens Mall in 2025, the format brings together two established names—ramen specialist IPPUDO and tonkatsu house MAiSEN—under one roof, now joined by what is positioned as Malaysia’s first Japanese highball bar in collaboration with House of Suntory.
The Bangsar opening builds on familiar ground. IPPUDO has occupied this location since 2014, but the space has now been reimagined and expanded to accommodate a broader, more layered dining experience. The result is less a straightforward restaurant and more a multi-faceted venue, where food and drink are given equal footing.
Cohesive Experience

At its core, the concept merges IPPUDO’s Hakata-style ramen with MAiSEN’s approach to tonkatsu, known for its precise preparation and premium cuts. The menu retains IPPUDO’s well-known Shiromaru and Akamaru ramen—both rooted in tonkotsu broth traditions—while introducing newer variations such as a Kurobuta pork-based ramen and a vegetable-forward option built around mushroom broth and truffle oil.
MAiSEN’s offerings add another dimension. Its signature tenderloin katsu, coated in fine panko and fried to a light crisp, sits alongside dishes such as katsumabushi, where bite-sized cutlets are served over rice with dashi and onsen egg. A takeaway selection of katsu sandwiches rounds out the menu, nodding to their popularity in Japan.
Spotlight On Highball Culture

What distinguishes the Bangsar outpost is its dedicated bar, centred on Suntory’s highball tradition. Here, Japanese whisky is served in its most accessible form—lengthened with soda and ice—yet with attention to detail that elevates the format. Variations range from the classic Kakubin highball to expressions using Hibiki, Yamazaki and Hakushu whiskies, alongside lighter options such as a Roku gin-based highball.
The bar is intended as more than an add-on; rather, it anchors the space as a social setting, aligning with the growing appetite for casual, drink-led dining experiences in the city. Precision-cut ice and controlled carbonation are small but telling details in a concept that leans heavily on craftsmanship.
Evolving Formats

The collaboration reflects a broader trend of established brands adapting to changing dining habits, where variety and versatility are increasingly valued. By combining ramen, tonkatsu and a dedicated bar programme, the Bangsar venue positions itself as an all-occasion destination—equally suited to a quick meal or a longer, more leisurely evening.
For regulars of the original IPPUDO outlet, the transformation signals an evolution rather than a departure. For newcomers, it offers a concise entry point into a trio of Japanese culinary traditions, now brought together within a single, cohesive setting.
