David Carson Redesigns The Macallan Double Cask and Sherry Oak Collections

The legendary designer illustrates a bold new visual identity for the brand

Renowned for its single malt Scotch whiskies, The Macallan has unveiled a striking new visual identity for its Double Cask and Sherry Oak collections, created in collaboration with acclaimed designer David Carson.

The redesign forms part of the brand’s wider Timeless Collections, offering a contemporary reinterpretation of its heritage while maintaining the craftsmanship and flavour profiles that have long defined The Macallan.

A visual language rooted in heritage

Carson’s approach draws from the very elements that shape the whisky itself. From the architectural form of The Macallan Distillery to the influence of sherry-seasoned oak casks, the new design embeds storytelling into every detail.

The bottle’s form echoes the distillery’s distinctive silhouette and sweeping green roof, while a triangular shoulder label references Spain’s famed Sherry Triangle — a nod to the Andalusian region that supplies the casks central to The Macallan’s maturation process.

Further design elements extend to the rear labels, where new cask symbols visually interpret flavour profiles derived from American and European oak. Enhanced traceability features, including integrated QR codes and anti-counterfeit technology, also reflect a growing focus on transparency and consumer engagement in the luxury spirits space.

Balancing tradition with a modern perspective

Despite the visual transformation, the whisky itself remains unchanged — retaining the balance, elegance and depth synonymous with Theluxury spirits Macallan.

The Double Cask Collection continues to explore the harmony between American and European oak casks seasoned with sherry from Jerez de la Frontera, delivering a profile of fresh fruit, toffee sweetness and soft spice. Meanwhile, the Sherry Oak range remains rooted in European oak, producing richer, more robust expressions defined by dried fruit, ginger and deep wood spice.

For Carson, the project reflects a shared philosophy between design and whisky-making. He describes the work as an exercise in balance — respecting heritage while capturing a forward-looking spirit through form, texture and detail.

A continued creative collaboration

This latest redesign builds on Carson’s previous work with the brand, following his visual direction for The Macallan’s Colour Collection in 2023. The evolution signals a broader creative direction for the Timeless Collections, aligning design more closely with the narrative of craft behind each expression.

According to the brand, the new identity is intended to offer multiple visual cues that communicate the story of its whisky — from the role of sherry seasoning to the influence of oak casks on flavour and colour.

Reinforcing a legacy through design

As luxury spirits brands increasingly turn to design as a means of storytelling, The Macallan’s collaboration with David Carson underscores the role of visual identity in shaping perception and experience.

By reimagining its core collections without altering the liquid itself, the brand reinforces a delicate balance between continuity and innovation — ensuring that while the look evolves, the essence remains unmistakably The Macallan.
