Montecristo Takes Its Cigars On The Road With The New Fragata

There is something inherently romantic about travelling with a cigar. It is an object designed to slow down time, yet one that has traditionally been associated with journeys, hotels, ports and places far from home.

Montecristo is leaning into that connection with the Montecristo Fragata, a new travel humidor created exclusively for duty-free and travel-retail channels.

Unveiled at the TFWA World Exhibition & Conference in Cannes, the Fragata is designed as a portable expression of the Cuban cigar house, bringing together a new vitola and a purpose-built humidor in a format intended for travellers.

A New Montecristo For The Journey

The travel humidor houses 20 Montecristo Fragata Habanos, a new vitola created specifically for the Montecristo portfolio.

Presented in a Duke format, each cigar measures 54 ring gauge by 140mm and uses Montecristo’s familiar blend, described as medium to full strength. The cigars are Totalmente a Mano con Tripa Larga — totally handmade with long filler — using tobacco leaves selected from the Vuelta Abajo area of Cuba’s Pinar del Río region.

Each carries a dedicated band identifying the new Fragata vitola.

The name is more than a nautical flourish. Montecristo takes its identity from Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo, a story shaped by imprisonment, escape, travel and discovery. “Fragata”, referring to a frigate, extends that literary association into a product conceived specifically around movement.

A Montecristo Built For Travel Retail

The timing is deliberate. Montecristo celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2026, while Habanos has spent two decades developing products specifically for the duty-free and travel-retail market.

Fragata sits naturally within that world. Rather than treating travel retail simply as another point of sale, the humidor is conceived around the traveller itself — compact enough to travel with but still positioned as a collector-oriented object.

It also reflects a broader luxury-travel proposition in which the journey has become part of the experience. The humidor becomes a way of taking a particular ritual with you, whether the destination is a hotel, a private residence or somewhere further afield.

For Montecristo, the Fragata therefore extends a story that began in Havana in 1935 into a new setting: not simply the cigar lounge, but the journey between destinations.

The Montecristo Fragata will be available exclusively through Duty Free & Travel Retail channels.
