Nestled in the breathtaking Southern Lakes Region of New Zealand, a project of architectural brilliance stands proudly on the shores of Lake Wokaipuo, a location that is proximate to Queenstown yet artfully nestled away from the bustling urban centre. The Matagouri House is designed with meticulous attention to the surrounding landscape which includes The Remarkables mountain range, creating a harmonious balance between natural beauty and architectural ingenuity.
Perched on a plateau above the lake, the structure stands alone, providing unmatched solitude devoid of any neighbouring structures. In designing this private residence, Auckland-based architect Fearon Hay understood the delicate approach in balancing the size of the building with the residents’ comfort.
Matagouri House features a layout consisting of two cubic masonry structures deliberately positioned apart, with an exterior connection achieved through a courtyard strategically shielded from the elements by the built form.
This 4,470-square-foot house is a study in simplicity, featuring rectangular forms nestled into the embrace of two hills. The defining element is a horizontal timber-structured roof that spans these hills, effectively elevating the ground plane by one story. The roof, covered with earth and planted with native grasses, beautifully mimics the natural contours of the terrain.
As visitors approached the wrought-iron gates, they were greeted by the melodious symphony of wind chimes, suspended from the ancient thorny native shrubs or small trees that stood sentinel at the entrance. The pathway, lined with fragrant lavender bushes, led to a cobblestone courtyard where Matagouri House unveiled its secrets.
Upon stepping inside, guests were welcomed by the warm embrace of a grand foyer adorned with refined furniture and decorations. The walls whispered tales of triumphs and tribulations, each frame a chapter in the narrative of the Matagouri legacy. As a whole, the interior spaces exude a marriage of contemporary design and rustic charm.
The heart of Matagouri House lay in its inviting living room, where a crackling fireplace danced with amber flames, casting a comforting glow across the room. Plush, well-worn sofas invite guests to lounge around. The lower-level living spaces are strategically designed to offer views of both the lake and the mountains, enveloping the courtyard to shield against southerly winds from the lake and enabling outdoor living even in adverse weather conditions.
The northern section of the lower level encompasses the kitchen, living, and dining areas, while the southern part, separated by the courtyard, serves as a guest wing and study with views of the Remarkables. The locally sourced engineered timber structure unites all elements, celebrating light and materiality throughout.
A majestic staircase, polished to a sheen over the years, beckons curious souls to ascend and explore the stories on the upper floors. The built environment is integrated into the northern hillside, with the primary sleeping quarters situated on the upper level to capture panoramic 360-degree views. Elevating the bedroom to a position with a panoramic view over the sculptural landscaped roof adds a distinctive touch, enhancing the overall spatial experience.
The residence seeks to interact with the stunning 360-degree panoramas, all the while respecting the unspoiled nature and seclusion of the nearby landscape. The concept of a “sense of ruin” adds a layer of authenticity, as if the building had organically grown within its surroundings. Its exterior walls bear historical embellishments, and the corridors whisper tales of a bygone era.
Externally, the building’s palette is a reflection of the surrounding landscape. The choice of masonry colour and tone is influenced by the rocks and hues of the natural environment. Planting specifications on the green roof take inspiration from the topography, ensuring a seamless integration with the land. The result is a structure that looks outward for inspiration, finding its key ingredients in the surrounding environment.
Outside, the backyard of Matagouri House unfolds like a secret garden, a haven of serenity bathed in the soft hues of a setting sun. Picture this: A weathered wooden swing swaying gently in the breeze. The fragrance of blooming flowers and the distant melody of birds serenade residents as they explore the enchanting grounds.
As the residence continues to develop over time, its story becomes a compelling narrative of thoughtful design in the heart of New Zealand’s Southern Lakes Region.
