The Largest-Ever Cartier Exhibition In Australia Is Taking Place In Melbourne

Featuring nearly 400 jewels, timepieces and precious objects, the Melbourne-exclusive exhibition explores the enduring legacy of one of the world’s most influential luxury houses.
Australia’s cultural calendar is set to sparkle in 2026 with the arrival of CARTIER, a major Melbourne exhibition at NGV International that brings together nearly 400 jewels, timepieces and precious objects from the storied French maison.
Opening on 12 June as part of the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces® series, the exhibition marks the largest presentation of Cartier ever staged in Australia. Adapted and expanded from its acclaimed run at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, the Melbourne-exclusive edition includes almost 300 works never previously seen in the country.
Spanning more than a century of design, craftsmanship and innovation, the exhibition traces Cartier’s rise from a Parisian jeweller to one of the most recognisable luxury houses in the world.

Jewels Of Royalty And Celebrity

Among the exhibition’s greatest draws is an extraordinary collection of pieces associated with some of history’s most glamorous figures. Creations once owned or worn by Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Princess Margaret, the Duchess of Windsor, Dame Nellie Melba and Rihanna feature throughout the presentation, illustrating Cartier’s enduring appeal across generations and continents.
The exhibition also highlights the maison’s long-standing relationships with royalty, aristocracy and society figures, including the Maharaja of Patiala, the Begum Aga Khan III, Daisy Fellowes and Barbara Hutton. Together, the pieces reveal how Cartier became synonymous with prestige, influence and exceptional craftsmanship.

A Celebration Of The Tiara

A centrepiece of the exhibition is a remarkable display of more than 30 tiaras, including a final gallery dedicated to 24 examples of the form. Long associated with ceremonial occasions and high society, the tiara remains one of Cartier’s most celebrated creations.
Among the highlights is the renowned Scroll Tiara, worn by Lady Clementine Churchill at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and later famously photographed on Rihanna for the cover of W magazine.
The exhibition also includes the Manchester Tiara, commissioned in the early twentieth century, alongside a range of rarely displayed examples that showcase the technical and artistic sophistication of Cartier’s workshops.

Beyond Jewellery

While jewellery remains the primary focus, the exhibition also explores the broader creative universe of Cartier through archival drawings, photographs, sketchbooks and historic documents. Visitors will encounter iconic Tutti Frutti creations, intricate Mystery Clocks and exceptional gemstones that demonstrate the maison’s enduring spirit of experimentation.
The immersive exhibition design, created in collaboration with Studio Sabine Marcelis and CLOUD, draws inspiration from the interplay of colour, light and materiality that defines Cartier’s aesthetic language. An original soundtrack further enhances the experience, transforming the galleries into a multisensory exploration of luxury and artistry.

As major fashion and jewellery exhibitions continue to attract global audiences, CARTIER positions Melbourne alongside leading cultural capitals. More than a showcase of precious objects, the exhibition offers a rare insight into how one maison helped shape the visual language of luxury for more than a century.

The Melbourne Winter Masterpieces® exhibition CARTIER will be on display at NGV International from 12 June to 4 October 2026.
