Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket: A Resort That Stands The Test Of Time

For nearly four decades, this resort has evolved with its surroundings, balancing old-world Thai hospitality with contemporary resort living.

As the sun begins its descent over the Andaman Sea, Casuarina Beach Club settles into its evening rhythm. The beach is still warm from the day, cocktails appear at the bar and dinner unfolds against the changing colours of the horizon. There is little urgency to any of it.

It is an appropriate introduction to Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket, a resort whose appeal has always been less about spectacle than a cultivated ease. Opened in the late 1980s as Thailand’s first Thai-operated luxury resort, it arrived when Phuket’s modern tourism story was still taking shape. Decades later, the resort remains recognisably itself, even as the landscape around it has changed considerably.

A RESORT WITH ROOTS

That history is tangible. Thai architectural references, mature gardens and the traditional teak setting in its spaces lend the property a sense of permanence, framed by shaded pathways, the lagoon beyond and an expansive beach just steps away. But this is not a resort preserved in another era.

Since opening, the resort has evolved alongside its guests and surroundings, introducing contemporary experiences without losing the character that defines it. Mornings can begin with yoga by the beach or an open-air treatment on the lawns, before breakfast gives way to the less structured business of a holiday.

There is golf, kayaking on the lagoon or simply an afternoon between the pool and beach. For a short break, that freedom matters, there is plenty to do, but little pressure to do it all. Food becomes part of that rhythm rather than the main event. At Benjarong, a cooking session with Chef Boonram offers an introduction to Thai cuisine through its ingredients and techniques.

Having spent three decades at Dusit Thani, he represents a more personal form of continuity, carrying knowledge and recipes that have remained part of the resort’s identity.

The experience moves naturally from kitchen to table, with traditional Thai dishes served in the elegant teak house overlooking the lagoon. Dinner at La Trattoria offers a change of register. Chef Massimiliano Piccardi brings Northern Italian flavours shaped by an international career, adding another layer to the resort’s dining experience.

DAYS AT AN EASIER PACE

Beyond the dining rooms, the resort is designed around on how each guest chooses to spend the day. There is little need to follow a fixed itinerary. A morning outdoors can lead to a leisurely breakfast, an afternoon by the pool and sunset drinks. The beach is always close, while the gardens and lagoon provide a quieter backdrop when the heat of the day begins to fade.

It offers a pace that suits the short break traveller particularly well allowing ample breathing room for a holiday to unfold on its own terms. And when the mood shifts, there is plenty immediately beyond the resort.

When the resort opened, the surrounding area was very different. Laguna Phuket grew from a former tin mining landscape into an integrated resort destination, transforming the local environment while creating employment and infrastructure. Today, more than 1,000 acres of tropical parkland, lagoons and beachfront connect a collection of resorts, restaurants, recreational facilities, parks and jogging trails. The resort has effectively grown up with it.

For guests, the benefit is not simply a longer list of activities. It is the ability to move between different experiences while keeping the resort as a familiar base. Laguna Golf, the lagoons and the surrounding landscape extend the possibilities, while the complimentary shuttle and ferry network makes it easy to explore beyond the immediate property.

A PARADISAL ESCAPE

There are also more contemporary additions within easy reach. RAVA Beach Club, for instance, sits on Bang Tao Beach within the Laguna Phuket complex, offering a more expansive beach-club experience with pools, cabanas, dining and music. It is a reminder that the wider destination has developed considerably since Dusit Thani first opened. Yet the resort itself remains the point of return.

This is perhaps where its longevity becomes most apparent. Mature trees have become part of the landscape, staff have accumulated years of knowledge and the property has acquired a familiarity that cannot be replicated by a newly opened hotel.

At the same time, it has avoided becoming overly tied to its past. The beachfront dining, outdoor wellness experiences and broader range of activities reflect how the expectations of a luxury stay have changed, while the architecture, gardens and Thai hospitality retain the qualities that give the resort its identity.

There is no shortage of choice in Phuket but what Dusit Thani offers though is something quieter. It is a resort with enough history to feel established yet sufficiently attuned to the world around it to remain relevant. Nearly four decades since opening, perhaps its greatest achievement is that it has evolved without losing the character that made it distinctive in the first place.
