Volvo EX30 Cross Country Launches in Malaysia

Combining urban agility with greater capability for weekend escapes beyond the city.

Volvo Car Malaysia has introduced the EX30 Cross Country, a more rugged interpretation of its compact electric SUV designed to move comfortably between urban commutes and weekend escapes.

The proposition is straightforward: a vehicle compact enough for the streets of Klang Valley, but equipped with the capability to venture beyond the city. As Volvo’s first fully electric Cross Country model, the EX30 Cross Country builds on the award-winning EX30 with increased ground clearance, all-wheel drive and a series of design and functional upgrades.

The idea draws on a tradition that dates back to 1997, when Volvo introduced its first Cross Country model to cope with the demanding conditions of the Scandinavian climate. Since then, the designation has come to represent a particular balance of everyday comfort and outdoor capability.

From City To Country

At the heart of the EX30 Cross Country is a twin-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 428hp and 543Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 3.7 seconds, while steering software has been tuned to provide greater control through tighter corners and changing road conditions.

Ground clearance is increased by 19mm over the standard EX30, while an advanced chassis and 19-inch five-spoke wheels are designed to absorb disturbances from rougher surfaces.

For everyday driving, the EX30 Cross Country offers a claimed range of up to 437km under WLTP conditions. Its 69kWh NMC battery can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in 27 minutes when connected to a 175kW DC rapid charger.

The result is an electric SUV that is less about choosing between city and countryside than moving between the two without changing cars.

Scandinavian, With A Rougher Edge

Visually, Volvo has retained the clean, minimalist character of the EX30 while introducing details that give the Cross Country a more purposeful stance.

Matt black and Vapour Grey elements are paired with low-gloss skid plates, matte black lower bumpers and wheel-arch extensions. Cross Country badging on the C-pillar and rear adds a discreet reference to its more adventurous character.

Inside, the cabin takes its palette from the natural world, with charcoal woven textile, Nordico upholstery, denim-inspired decorative panels and blue air-vent detailing. A panoramic roof brings more natural light into the cabin, reinforcing the connection between the interior and the outdoors.

Practicality has also been considered. The EX30’s distinctive storage solutions remain, including large door compartments, a central storage area and a removable rear box that doubles as a waste bin. Luggage capacity ranges from 318 litres with all seats in place to 718 litres with the second row folded.

For those carrying equipment rather than shopping bags, optional accessories include mud flaps, load carriers, a bicycle rack and roof basket.

Capability Without Compromise

The Cross Country’s outdoor credentials do not come at the expense of the technology and safety expected of a contemporary Volvo.

The SUV uses radars and multiple sensors to provide 360-degree environmental awareness, while Volvo’s Safe Space Technology and driver-assistance systems provide braking and steering support for collision avoidance. Pilot Assist and Park Pilot Assist are also included.

Inside, Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play are integrated into the 12.3-inch centre screen, alongside wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A Harman Kardon Premium Sound system completes the technology package.

Sustainability remains central, too. As a fully electric vehicle, the EX30 Cross Country produces zero tailpipe emissions, while its cabin incorporates materials including upcycled denim textiles and bio-attributed Nordico upholstery.

Locally assembled in Malaysia, the EX30 Cross Country is priced from RM218,888, with three exterior colours: Crystal White, Vapour Grey and Cloud Blue.

More significantly, it expands the idea of what a compact electric SUV can be in Malaysia. The EX30 Cross Country does not abandon the city for the outdoors; it is designed for a lifestyle in which the two increasingly coexist.
