Malaysia’s SUV market has never been more crowded. Yet amid a sea of crossovers designed primarily for urban life, the new GWM TANK 300 HEV takes a different approach.
Priced at RM259,800, the latest addition to GWM Malaysia’s line-up retains the rugged architecture that helped establish the TANK 300’s reputation among off-road enthusiasts, while introducing a hybrid powertrain designed to improve refinement, efficiency and everyday usability.
For buyers who want genuine off-road capability without sacrificing modern comfort, it presents an increasingly rare proposition.
A Proper Off-Roader, Now with Hybrid Power

Unlike many SUVs that rely on styling cues to convey toughness, the TANK 300 HEV is built around a traditional body-on-frame ladder chassis, the same construction method used by many of the world’s most respected off-road vehicles.
The hybrid system pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, producing a combined 346PS and 648Nm of torque. The result is stronger low-speed responsiveness, smoother acceleration and improved efficiency compared to a conventional powertrain.
Importantly, the electrification has not altered the vehicle’s underlying character.
The TANK 300 HEV retains its full-time on-demand four-wheel-drive system, low-range transfer case, multiple terrain modes, Crawl Control and Tank Turn Assist. Together, these systems are designed to help the vehicle tackle challenging terrain while remaining comfortable and composed on everyday roads.
Inside, the focus shifts towards refinement, with Nappa leather upholstery, a nine-speaker Infinity audio system and a suite of connectivity features designed to make the vehicle equally suitable for daily commuting and weekend adventures.
Rally Success Adds Credibility

The launch arrives shortly after GWM celebrated one of its most significant off-road achievements to date.
At the 2026 Taklimakan Rally, widely regarded as one of Asia’s most demanding motorsport events, GWM secured victories across all T2 production vehicle categories, claiming the T2.E New-Energy Manufacturers’ Cup, T2.1 ICE Manufacturers’ Cup and T2.3 Production Club Cup.
Covering 7,500 kilometres across 17 days, the rally pushed competitors through desert landscapes, river crossings, rocky terrain and extreme temperatures. The event is known for exposing weaknesses in both vehicles and drivers, making reliability as important as outright performance.
Perhaps most impressively, GWM’s factory-backed entries completed the rally without a single mechanical retirement.
While the competition vehicle was the flagship TANK 700 Hi4-T rather than the TANK 300 HEV itself, the achievement highlights the broader engineering expertise and development philosophy that underpin the entire TANK family.
Capability Beyond the Spec Sheet

For automotive brands, off-road motorsport remains one of the toughest proving grounds available.
Extreme endurance events place enormous stress on cooling systems, drivetrains, suspension components and vehicle structures. The lessons learned in these environments often influence future production vehicles, helping manufacturers refine durability, reliability and overall performance.
That connection is central to GWM’s message as it expands its presence in Malaysia.
The TANK 300 HEV may be positioned as a more refined and efficient alternative within the range, but it remains rooted in the same engineering principles that guide the brand’s more extreme off-road programmes.
In a market increasingly dominated by lifestyle-oriented SUVs, that distinction could prove to be one of its strongest selling points.
A Different Kind of Hybrid SUV
The introduction of the TANK 300 HEV reflects a broader shift within the SUV market, where buyers are seeking vehicles capable of balancing adventure, practicality and efficiency.
Rather than replacing the existing petrol-powered model, the hybrid variant expands the range, offering customers an alternative that delivers greater refinement without compromising the rugged capability that defines the TANK name.
For GWM, the message is straightforward: electrification is an evolution, not a departure.
And for Malaysian buyers looking beyond the typical urban crossover, the TANK 300 HEV may be one of the more interesting arrivals of the year.
