Volvo has introduced a new single-motor version of its electric-only EC40 crossover SUV, making it more accessible to those looking to switch to electric without jumping into the deep end of high-performance EVs. The updated model, set for the 2026 model year, comes in at RM248,888, which is RM40,000 less than the existing twin-motor variant.
More Relaxed Kind Of Power
While it may have lost one of its motors, this EC40 hasn’t exactly gone soft. It’s still got a decent amount of punch, with 238hp (175kW) sent to the rear wheels, and it does 0–100 km/h in a respectable 7.3 seconds.
It’s fitted with a 70kWh battery, which Volvo says is good for up to 488 km of range (WLTP). For most people, that’ll cover plenty of daily driving before needing to plug in. And when you do, a fast charger can take the battery from 10% to 80% in just 26 minutes.
A Fresh Coat Of Paint
Volvo is also rolling out a new colour option called Sand Dune — a warm, metallic shade with glass flakes that catch the sunlight, inspired by Sweden’s west coast dunes. It joins the more familiar Aurora Silver, Onyx Black, and Crystal White options.
Design-wise, the EC40 retains its clean, modern silhouette, with a confident stance, large wheels, and those iconic swooping rear lights. It’s a crossover that still leans towards the sporty side, without shouting about it.
Sustainable, Not Spartan
As with other recent Volvo models, the EC40 continues to skip leather entirely in favour of more sustainable materials. The interior features Charcoal Connect suede textile and Charcoal Microtech, giving it a refined but relaxed feel.
There are also cutting-edge design details on the dash and door panels, which add a bit of visual interest without being over the top. One of the quieter upgrades is the EC40’s new user interface, which Volvo borrowed from its smaller EX30.
It’s designed to be more intuitive, with fewer taps needed to get to frequently used functions — something that might be appreciated when you’re on the move. The 9-inch central display still runs Google built-in, while the 12.3-inch digital driver’s display gives you all the usual info right in front of you.
Even though this is technically the “entry-level” EC40, you’re not missing out on safety. Volvo includes its full Safe Space Technology package, featuring advanced driver assistance systems, collision avoidance, and a reinforced body structure that helps protect you and others.
A Few More Extras
For a limited time, Volvo Car Malaysia is throwing in free first-year insurance worth RM5,600, plus a wallbox charger voucher worth RM5,000. It’s a nice touch for those considering the switch to electric.
Volvo’s move to introduce a more affordable EC40 shows there’s a growing demand for electric cars that don’t necessarily need to be top-spec or ultra-quick. This new version keeps the look, feel, and overall ethos of the EC40 intact — just with one motor instead of two.
It’s still stylish, still thoughtfully designed, and now just that bit more within reach.
