When you were a child, what did you want to be?
I always knew I wanted to be in business. As a kid, I had always enjoyed reading stories about entrepreneurs. These people take risks, start ventures and transform them into enterprises. In a way, even Shakespeare was somewhat of an entrepreneur, especially once you consider how much work went into putting on theatre productions back then!
Did you ever think you would be the Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Tumi?
I had already been a fan of the brand for many years prior to taking on these roles. The people who I knew travelled globally also used Tumi more than any other brand, and the level of passion they expressed towards the brand made a lifetime impression on me. Tumi is such a rare gem, and it has truly been a privilege for me to lead the organisation here in Asia.
What has been the most exciting thing about working at Tumi?
It would have to be sharing the brand’s story with new consumers via our products, our stores and our people. Our customers and their journeys with our products have also been the driving force behind our passion. I find it truly remarkable how many consumers become fans once our products become part of their lives, and I believe that even greater opportunities lie ahead now that more consumers in Asia are discovering the brand.
How would you describe the significance of the 1975 capsule collection?
Tumi is proud to celebrate 40 years of design excellence and outstanding product innovation with this collection, which also pays homage to its founding year. The collection references the fundamental elements of the original designs by using premium leathers and the original silhouettes while also integrating Tumi’s iconic ballistic nylon fabric in an effort to create a new attitude and an assortment that is unique yet still reminiscent of its inspiration. This exclusive commemorative collection embodies the meticulous craftsmanship, technical innovation and functional superiority that Tumi has always been renowned for.
What exactly goes into designing a Tumi bag?
Tumi has always been about perfecting the journey. We research the latest developments in technology and perform trend analyses to provide our customers with beautiful, world-class business and travel products that are designed to upgrade all aspects of their life on the move. Attention to quality and product selection are also key attributes that have enabled Tumi to become the leading international business, accessory and travel lifestyle brand that it is today. Every single design and production component — from the smallest, case-hardened solid steel machine screw to the virtually abrasion-proof FXT™ Ballistic Nylon® fabric — is equally important.
Besides technical innovation, Tumi’s success has also been driven by its ability to anticipate trends. In your opinion, what do today’s discerning travellers look out for when it comes to selecting top-notch travel cases?
In today’s market, design plays a pivotal role towards the final purchasing decision, so our designers are constantly researching and seeking out new trends and materials. Customers also prefer to seek out functional and innovative travel cases that will make their journeys less of a hassle. This includes anything from additional packing space, having multiple pockets and places for gadgets; or how easy it is to navigate while travelling around. Consumers also care about the level of aftercare service, which is why we at Tumi work tirelessly to both meet and exceed these expectations.
Are there any other developments that Tumi fans can expect in the near future?
We definitely have some exciting new developments coming out, but you’ll have to stay tuned!
Is there a specific model that you simply can’t travel without?
One of my absolute favourite bags is the Arrivé Wheeled Carry On complete with leather trim. Not only is it my perfect travel companion, it really suits my personal style as well. I like to travel light and prefer to use a carry-on. This case fits all the travel essentials that I need for a short trip including jacket, shirts, trousers, a few pairs of shoes and a small toiletry bag. I also love to slip my favourite Beacon Hill Revere Leather Brief Pack over the handles by using the Add-a-Bag sleeve function. It has really changed the way I travel. For me, comfort and convenience will always be the key to effortless travel, which I believe is something that Tumi does exceptionally well.
