Malaysia’s cocktail culture has evolved rapidly over the past decade, moving beyond classic bar programmes into a more expressive and globally connected scene shaped by technique, narrative and identity. The finale of World Class Bartender of the Year Malaysia 2026 reflected that evolution in full.
Held at ENSŌ Izakaya & Bar within Hyatt Regency Kuala Lumpur at KL Midtown, the competition gathered the nation’s leading bartenders for a concluding showcase of creativity and composure under pressure.
The journey toward the final began months earlier, with competitors navigating multiple challenge rounds centred around iconic spirits including Johnnie Walker, Tanqueray, Don Julio and Ron Zacapa.

Each stage demanded more than technical execution alone. Participants were tasked with translating flavour into narrative—reinterpreting classic cocktail rituals through contemporary perspectives while balancing restraint, originality and hospitality.
The Johnnie Walker Black Label challenge encouraged bold reinterpretations of classic Scotch serves, while the Tanqueray No. Ten round focused on transforming moments of culture and personal joy into cocktails that felt both modern and emotionally resonant.
From the initial field, three finalists emerged: Justin Yow of Good Friends Club, Chew Qing Ting of Steep Social and Chang Yue Shuen of Coley.
Mixing Storytelling And Technique

The competition’s final stages shifted toward refinement and instinctive performance. During the Don Julio 1942 challenge, finalists were asked to create minimalist serves centred around singular tasting notes such as vanilla, caramel and roasted agave, relying solely on classic bar ingredients to express luxury through simplicity.
Meanwhile, the Ron Zacapa XO round explored a more atmospheric brief, inviting participants to interpret the brand’s “Aged Above the Clouds” philosophy through cocktails inspired by celebration, warmth and Latin American conviviality.

The winner will represent Malaysia at the World Class Global Final in Scotland.
The evening culminated in an intense speed challenge, tasking finalists to craft six cocktails within a strict timeframe using a randomised selection of spirits. Precision, adaptability and calm execution became just as important as flavour itself.
At the close of the competition, Chang Yue Shuen of Coley took the top prize. As World Class Bartender of the Year Malaysia 2026, she now earns the opportunity to represent Malaysia at the upcoming global finals in Scotland.
“Every challenge throughout this journey pushed me to think deeper about my craft, storytelling and creativity behind every serve,” expressed the winner. “It’s an incredible honour to represent Malaysia and share our cocktail culture on the World Class global stage.”
Separately, Marcus Kwok of Cabinet 8 received the Bartenders’ Bartender award—an industry-voted recognition reflecting peer respect within Malaysia’s close-knit bar community.
More than a competition, World Class increasingly functions as a snapshot of Malaysia’s growing presence within contemporary global cocktail culture. The level of sophistication displayed throughout the finale suggests a scene that is no longer emerging, but steadily defining its own voice through technique, hospitality and narrative-driven creativity.
