Smart Wheels: Volvo Cars To Get Google Gemini

The tech giant’s latest conversational AI will be integrated into its cars.

Volvo Gemini

Volvo Cars has announced an expanded partnership with Google aimed at accelerating the rollout of new Android Automotive OS innovations in its vehicles. Central to this next phase of collaboration is the introduction of Google Gemini, the tech giant’s latest conversational AI, which will be integrated into Volvo models with Google built-in—beginning with the all-electric Volvo EX90.

Unveiled at Google I/O 2025, the partnership signals a major step forward in the development of intelligent, voice-driven vehicle interfaces. Gemini, set to replace Google Assistant in Volvo vehicles later this year, allows drivers to engage in more natural and intuitive conversations, reducing distractions and supporting a safer, more seamless driving experience.

Using conversational AI, drivers will be able to compose and translate messages, interact with the car’s user manual, and ask detailed questions about their journey or destination—all hands-free and in real time.

Smarter Drive

“For years, Google and Volvo Cars have collaborated closely to bring cutting-edge technology to connected cars,” said Patrick Brady, Vice President of Android for Cars at Google. “This deepened partnership will speed up innovation and improve the driving experience for Volvo customers while setting new standards for the industry.”

In a further development, Volvo Cars will now serve as one of Google’s reference hardware platforms for Android development in vehicles. This gives Volvo early access to new features and updates, enabling its customers to be among the first to enjoy the latest Android functionality, performance improvements, and user interface innovations.

This move not only strengthens Volvo’s position as a leader in in-car technology, but also contributes to broader advancements in the connected car space—benefiting the global automotive industry and drivers worldwide.

“We strive to deliver human-centric technology, and a stunning customer experience is an essential part of this,” added Alwin Bakkenes, Head of Global Software Engineering at Volvo Cars.

“Through this partnership with Google, we are able to bring the very latest features and capabilities from the leading consumer ecosystem into our products first. With our expanding partnership, we’re collaborating on cutting-edge solutions that shape the future of connected cars.”

The integration of Gemini into Volvo’s line-up is expected to begin later in 2025, with additional details to be announced in the coming months.
