Well-known for its distinctive aluminium-grooved suitcases, Rimowa has expanded its offering with a new collection of leather designs. Launching on 2nd November, the Distinct collection, which currently features only Cabin-sized suitcases, will be priced at approximately RM15,500 each.
Crafted using an innovative leather wrapping technique to ensure the suitcase holds its shape, the design is enhanced with anodised aluminium corners for extra durability and the Maison’s unmistakable signature grooves.

The German brand looked to the works of the late French artist and sculptor Pierre Soulages, who was known for using dark compositions and rich textures in his work, as inspiration for the design and craftsmanship behind the Distinct line.
As much as Rimowa is synonymous with aluminium-made luggage, the Maison was originally founded as a saddlery firm in 1898 and has been using leather in its designs since the early 20th century. In a way, the Distinct collection marks a return to Rimowa’s roots, showcasing the level of craftsmanship that extends beyond their best-known aluminium designs.

Rimowa, which marks its 125th anniversary this year, was acquired by LVMH in 2016 and has since achieved record revenues. Part of the brand’s successful marketing strategy could be credited to a number of high-profile collaborations over the years, including the sell-out tie-up with streetwear label Supreme in 2018 and more recently, with fellow LVMH-owned Tiffany & Co. A return to leather craftsmanship could very well hint at more exciting designer collaborations for the Maison.
While Rimowa may always be synonymous with its lightweight aluminium suitcases, the addition of the leather collection serves as a luxurious higher-end product for those who appreciate great craftsmanship and quality travel gear in a discreet, yet familiar design.
