This year, my goal is to stay consistent in my Kung Fu practice, which I started since the age of 12. I have always been fascinated by martial arts, which might have been influenced by folklore shared by my elders and listening to stories on the radio. While there are many forms, I chose what is known as “Hua Mei Fist”, which is a combination of Tai Chi, Wing Chun, Ba Qua and Tong Long. I practice a few times in a week at home in the evening or early in the morning. I find it helpful in strengthening my body, mind and soul. The motions and movements are great for toning the muscles and organs, while the meditative nature of the practice promotes calmness and clarity in the mind. Besides its therapeutic effects, it is also great for instilling discipline, resilience, confidence, sharpness and mental stability. The best part is that you can do it on your own, at your own pace and at your own convenience. It’s a physical and mental exercise that costs absolutely nothing, but brings with it immense personal benefits, which is especially important in this fast-paced, materialistic world as it encourages one to stay grounded and sane. Happiness, or at least lasting happiness, is something that cannot be bought but I believe that you can train your mind and soul to be happy.
