One of my greatest passions in life is playing rugby. I started during my secondary school days in Ipoh’s Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR), which is among the top rugby teams in country. I play for the STAR Old Boys (STAROBA) Rugby Club and we always train at Padang Timur in Petaling Jaya. We’ve participated in several tournaments as well as test matches against other teams from Malaysia and overseas. Recently, we played against the King’s College Veteran team in Bangkok, and intend to join a veteran tournament that will be held in Jakarta. With rugby, you need to put in a lot of effort, discipline, commitment as well as passion. It’s also one of the best ways to release stress and frustration. In order to play your best, you must take every match seriously and be fired up, especially since the sport involves a lot of tackling, getting hit and running the opponent over with the ball. If you don’t stay physically fit or hesitate while on the field, the risk of injury is much higher. Overall, it’s very much a gentleman’s game as whatever happens on the field, stays on the field. It’s also a great way to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, because everyone who shares this passion has had their fair share of shedding blood, sweat and tears.
