Inspired by minimalistic designs Yinn Ooi, the founder behind Gung Jewellery, wants to craft jewellery that can be worn for every occasion as a form of self-expression. In a conversation with The Peak, Yinn shares the pleasures and hurdles of managing an independent jewellery business. “Crafting jewellery is truly a labour of love,” she notes. “Witnessing our pieces become entwined with someone’s personal journey adds an extra layer of fulfilment.”
Since its inception in 2017, Gung Jewellery has been synonymous with timeless elegance and accessibility, embodying the founder’s passion for crafting pieces that resonate with the wearer’s uniqueness. Each piece is meticulously designed to capture the imagination and evoke a sense of wonder.
The name “Gung” derives from the Mandarin word “宫” and the Korean word “궁”, both translating to ‘Palace’. Why palace, you might ask? Well, historically, jewellery was reserved for royalty, those who resided in palaces. However, our mission is to democratise jewellery, making it accessible to everyone, regardless of their background.

With my background in interior architecture, I bring a distinctive perspective to jewellery designs. My keen understanding of form and structure infuses Gung’s creations with fluidity and mercurial beauty, setting them apart in the crowded realm of accessory design.
My typical weekday begins with the comforting routine of brewing a cup of coffee or stopping by a local coffee shop to grab one. It’s a small ritual that helps me gather my thoughts and prepare for the day ahead. Following that, I often engage in either strength training or a morning jog to jumpstart my day with energy and focus.

As I embark on the day’s agenda, I find myself fully immersed in a myriad of tasks. From delving into the creative process of brainstorming new designs to overseeing team management and fostering partnerships, each requires its unique attention. It’s a delicate dance of balancing creativity, strategy, and the practicalities of getting things done.
The most fulfilling aspect of my job undoubtedly lies in crafting jewellery that not only exudes beauty but also serves a practical purpose. Take, for example, our recent Hari Raya campaign, where we introduced a versatile brooch that doubles as earrings. Witnessing our designs manifest into tangible pieces and the joy they bring to people is truly the essence of our work.
Yet, the real challenge arises in maintaining a harmonious work environment while simultaneously meeting sales targets. I strive to cultivate a laid-back atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable and valued, but I also understand the necessity of driving the business forward.
