And now with his eldest daughter, Sandy, proudly at his side, things look all set to be moving along even more rapidly for Optimax. “From when I was a young girl, I have always looked up to my father as my mentor. I adored his principles in work and professionalism, and I’ve always admired his passion and determination in everything that he sets his mind to,†Sandy fondly remembers.
“Ever since I was 12, I have been following my father around, visiting the various eye care centres and listening to him speak with the various ophthalmologists. He would always tell me ‘when the time is right, you will definitely come and work with me’. Now at the age of 34, I am firmly committed to helping my father with growing the Optimax brand even further!â€
She began her professional life in banking and the fashion industry. Sandy first gained experience as a capital market and equity department executive before becoming an image consultant and later, a buyer at homegrown fashion label British India. This was where she honed an acute and irrefutable sense of marketing.
Then, after graduating with a law degree at the age of 28, Sandy was given the opportunity to take on the role of CEO at Optimax. “While I am in this role, I will always treat my father as a mentor and superior… and outside of work, then he becomes my dad again! I guess once we had established this ‘proper’ subordinate—superior relationship, we can both communicate with each other more effectively, and get even more things done a lot faster!â€
In this top management role, Sandy has been busy forging new strategies for the eye care conglomerate. “Key to this is perhaps creating more awareness about our brand, especially among a younger clientele who are more tech-savvy individuals. Hence, over the years the company has focused on reaching out and letting the public know more about our services through our strong web presence, and of course, social media,†she reveals.
Sandy feels that managing the flow of information is important as most of its patients go there seeking everything from laser refractive treatments to treatment for eye diseases and ocular conditions, including cataracts and glaucoma. “And these are certainly procedures that you obviously want to know a lot about first,†she adds.
With the unfortunate increase in the number of cataract cases in Malaysia, the No-Blade Cataract Surgery that Optimax specialises in is fast becoming a much sought after procedure. Also known as Femtosecond LaserAssisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS), this uses a powerful Femtosecond laser in removing the cataract, offering more surgical precision and safety in cataract surgery.
“By presenting a wealth of information on such procedures via our optimax2u.com website, and through our social media feeds, patients can get a better idea and understanding of the treatment choices that they may require even before they step in any one of our branches. And once they’re ready to commit to an appointment with us, they will quickly find out that all treatments offered are overseen by a team of 14 highly qualified resident ophthalmologists for absolute peace-of-mind,†continues Sandy.
“Also, we continuously offer exciting facilities to make potentially costly eye care procedures more affordable to anyone from all walks of life. So, we have made our services more accessible by offering a 0% interest-free, easy payment scheme to our patients – ranging from 12 months, 24 months to 36 months instalments.â€
Certainly, leading such an established market leader in the unique and demanding business of quality eye care is no easy task. But for this determined and visionary father-daughter team, perhaps no new obstacles or fresh challenges would be too difficult for them to overcome. And as 2020 further unfolds with a myriad of brand-new opportunities, be prepared for even more exciting news from the Optimax brand in Malaysia!
