Born in Norway in 1872, Amundsen studied medicine, his mother’s ambition for him, until she died when he was 21. Then, he pursued a life of exploration and went on to make history as the first person indisputably recognised to reach both the North Pole and the South Pole. Amundsen’s adventures inspired Montblanc’s special-edition fountain pens. The collection’s highlight, the High Artistry “Conquest of Antarctica†Homage to Roald Amundsen Limited Edition 1, is set with Antarctica-inspired diamonds, light-blue sapphires and aquamarines. On May 29, 1953, Kiwi mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary and climbing partner Tenzing Norgay became the first to summit Mount Everest. An accomplished mountaineer and explorer, Sir Edmund also gave back to the land that played a defining role in his career: Over the years, he helped to build airstrips, schools, hospitals and clinics in the Himalayas. His son, Peter – one of three children – has followed in his footsteps as a mountaineer and philanthropist. Additionally, he co-founded a luxury outdoor gear brand, the Edmund Hillary Collection. Launched last year, it recently opened its first monobrand store in Queenstown Airport, New Zealand.

BREITLING’S COCKPIT B50 ORBITER WATCH
Ballooning was one of humanity’s earliest ways of flying and, for a long time, also central to one of its unfulfilled dreams. On March 21, 1999, balloonists Bertrand Piccard (pictured above) and Brian Jones accomplished what 10 teams had previously tried – and failed – to do 21 times: They circumnavigated the globe in a nonstop flight. Flying in the Breitling Orbiter 3 balloon, the pair covered 45,755km in over 19 days. Twenty years later, Breitling has launched a commemorative timepiece – the Cockpit B50 Orbiter is a carbon-coated titanium watch powered by Breitling’s ultra-precise Superquartz movement.
