McLaren Kuala Lumpur is elevating its lineup with the thrilling introduction of the new McLaren Artura Spider.
Marking a significant milestone, the Artura Spider is McLaren’s first convertible featuring a high-performance hybrid powertrain. As the second model in the Artura series, it arrives with enhanced power, performance, and driver engagement, perfectly paired with the sensory pleasures of open-top motoring. This new dimension breathes life into the Artura, blending cutting-edge engineering with a sporty outlook that’s still relevant for urban living.
Not just content with the Spider’s debut, McLaren has also enhanced the Artura Coupe with the same engineering advancements. Both the Spider and Coupe now deliver exceptional dynamic performance perfect for urban settings, whether you’re pushing the limits on the track or navigating the everyday commute in near-silent electric mode.
Ravinder Singh, Chief Operating Officer of McLaren Kuala Lumpur, says: “When we launched the Artura coupe back in 2022, the zenith of performance driven by innovation that McLaren is renowned for was charged to new electrifying heights. The new Artura Spider introduced today brings the very same electrically charged thrills, this time with an open-top flair, making it perfect for those seeking greater exhilaration born from that charged performance mentioned.”
A Versatile and Immersive McLaren Experience
Designed with ambitious goals, the McLaren Artura Spider excels in every aspect–from driver engagement and performance to agility, refinement, and quality. Its retractable hard-top, which operates electrically in just 11 seconds, adds to the intoxicating supercar experience, offering a full convertible thrill.
Super-Lightweight, Incredible Driving
Super-lightweight engineering is key to the exceptional performance and driver engagement that defines McLaren’ cars. The Artura Spider is no exception, with a dry weight of just 1,457kg and a kerb weight of 1,560kg – only 62kg more than the coupe. This makes the Spider the lightest convertible in its class.
Paired with the 700PS high-performance hybrid powertrain, the Spider boasts a power-to-weight ratio of 480PS/tonne, optimising every aspect of its supercar capabilities. The mid-mounted engine and rear-wheel-drive chassis layout are fully exploited to provide razor-sharp performance.
The McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA) ensures that the Spider maintains its structural integrity even with the roof down, with the weight difference largely due to the electrically operated Retractable Hard Top (RHT). This innovative architecture, combined with aluminium impact structures and a hybrid powertrain housed in a rear structure, reduces cabling by 25 percent, further trimming weight and enhancing performance.
A Symphony of Sound and Power
The hybrid powertrain has been recalibrated to extract an additional 20PS from the V6 combustion engine, bringing the total to 700PS. This power boost, particularly noticeable from 4,000rpm to the redline at 8,500rpm, creates a crescendo in performance that’s both thrilling and engaging. The peak torque of 720Nm remains, delivered with precision thanks to refined electronic mapping. Existing Artura owners will also benefit from this recalibration, available free of charge via their McLaren retailer.
The engine’s compact and lightweight design, combined with twin-turbochargers in the ‘hot vee’ configuration, enhances throttle response and reduces pressure losses, allowing the V6 to deliver its 605PS with impressive efficiency. The upward conical tailpipes and valved exhaust system create a clean, resonant sound that envelops occupants in the cabin.
The E-motor complements the V6, generating 95PS and 225Nm with a power density 33 percent greater than that of the iconic McLaren P1™ hypercar. The motor is powered by a battery pack offering a usable energy capacity of 7.4kWh, delivering an increased electric-only range of 33km.
Overall, the Artura Spider’s hybrid components add just 130kg to its weight, an achievement that contributes to its best-in-class status. The instant torque provided by the E-motor, combined with the V6 engine’s output, results in lightning-fast acceleration and razor-sharp throttle response, whether shifting through gears or cruising in electric mode.
The Artura Spider’s official performance figures speak volumes: 0-100km/h in 3.0 seconds, 0-200km/h in 8.4 seconds, and a top speed of 330km/h (205mph).
An Intoxicating Silhouette
The Artura Spider’s design is immediately recognisable, with its signature ‘shrink-wrapped’ bodywork, hammerhead nose, and dihedral doors. As a convertible, the Spider exudes its own unique identity, with the Retractable Hard Top system central to its design. The new buttresses, incorporating the rollover structure and a glazed section for improved rear visibility, are integrated to maintain the car’s sleek lines.
The carbon fibre and composite Retractable Hard Top can be configured with an Electrochromic glass panel, allowing you to adjust the light in the cabin with the touch of a button. McLaren’s use of Suspended Particle (SPD) technology reduces heat transfer, keeping the interior cool even in bright sunlight.
The RHT system operates in near silence, folding the roof in just 11 seconds. The lightweight carbon composite tonneau cover, which can be finished in gloss carbon fibre, ensures that it remains as visually striking with the roof up as it is with the roof down.
Available from RM 3.4 million, the new Artura Spider offers an unparalleled driving experience that redefines what’s possible in a hybrid supercar.
