The Design Museum explores life on Mars as a viable lifestyle–from clothing to permaculture, furniture to architecture, Moving To Mars imagines how pioneers to the red planet will live and operate on a day-to-day basis. With NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Orion Project well underway, Mars exploration and eventually, habitation, is inevitable. In this unique museum exhibition, Designers and architects are already imagining and complementing this vision as a complete whole.
As Justin McGuirk, Chief Curator at the Design Museum said: “On the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing, we are entering a new space age, with Mars once again capturing the popular imagination. As a museum interested in emergent futures, we are keen to explore how designing for space can help us design for Earth.â€
The exhibition will showcase over 200 objects and materials from NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), SpaceX, Raymond Loewy, Chesley Bonestell and new commissions from design company RÆBURN, Anna Talvi and Konstantin Grcic.
Visitors can also immerse themselves in Martian living with two major installations. A multisensory experience entitled On Mars Today allows visitors into a full-scale prototype habitat by design firm Hassell. The second installation uses a gaming simulation designed by Dr. Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg exploring plant life on Mars.
The exhibition runs from 18 October 2019 until 23 February 2020.
