It was when I met with Alex and Kelvin Cheah, the co-founders of the KARLS Group, that I learnt that the company’s name is an acronym and that the “S” in KARLS actually stands for ‘Soiree’. “This focuses on the event activations that we work together with luxury brands,” says Alex.
While the lifestyle hospitality group is well known for operating award-winning restaurants such as the Michelin-starred Beta and the Michelin-selected Skillet, the Group is also known for staging some of KL’s glitziest events.
“A lot of the enjoyment of what we do come from seeing our clients enjoy themselves, whether it’s at one of our restaurants or at an event. I just get this indescribable feeling of satisfaction,” says Kelvin.
The Davidoff Signature Series.
Today we meet the two brothers at Upper House, a new casual rooftop experience that KARLS Group has just unveiled. With sweeping views of the city’s skyline, the duo tends to unwind here after a busy day with a cigar.
For Kelvin, who always goes for a well-crafted and medium-bodied cigar, Davidoff’s Signature Series makes for the perfect cigar to enjoy at the end of a busy day. “It also goes well with whisky, says Kelvin of the Davidoff Signature 2000. “I feel like this is a cigar that can be enjoyed anytime.”
Meanwhile, Alex, who reveals that his first experience with cigars was in Miami almost a decade ago, tends to go for a smooth and refined blend for his cigars. “The Davidoff Signature Series is good for any time of day. It’s mild and has a refined taste, which is perfect for any occasion,” he says.
When it comes to the perfect setting to enjoy a smoke, the duo agrees that it takes great company to make the moment even more special. As Alex puts it: “I’m not so much of a party person. I’d rather have good music, good friends and a great view of the city’s skyline – that makes the perfect night out for me.”
