For 50 years, the BMW 3 Series exemplified passion, precision, and purpose. From its 1975 debut to today’s tech-forward G20 generation, the 3 Series is more than just BMW’s best-seller — it’s the heart and soul of the brand. Each generation carries forward a legacy of innovation, blending iconic design with ever-evolving performance and technology.
In lieu of this incredible milestone, BMW Malaysia has just launched a new limited-edition model. The brand is also putting on a three-day celebration of five decades of the BMW 3 Series. From vintage classics to cutting-edge tech, explore all seven generations of this iconic nameplate.
Ahead of the big event, we list down some of the iconic models that have defined the series. Here’s a journey through generations of one of the world’s most beloved automobiles.
E21 (1975–1983)
The story began with the E21, designed by Paul Bracq. It set the tone for BMW’s future, introducing the classic kidney grilles, Hofmeister kink, and a driver-focused cockpit. This compact sport sedan quickly became a benchmark in its class.
E30 (1982–1991)
A true icon, the E30 added new body styles and gave birth to the legendary M3. It also introduced the Touring model, thanks to a visionary BMW engineer’s passion project. It remains one of the most beloved 3 Series generations to date.
E36 (1990–1998)
The E36 embraced versatility with a wide range of variants including Sedan, Coupé, Convertible, Touring, and Compact. It also modernized the design with a sleeker silhouette and introduced efficient diesel options, broadening the 3 Series’ global appeal.
E46 (1997–2006)
Widely considered the most successful generation, the E46 refined the 3 Series’ design and introduced the high-performance M3 CSL. It became BMW’s top-selling model with over 3.2 million units sold, blending elegance and driving dynamics perfectly.
E90 (2005–2011)
A bold new look emerged under designer Joji Nagashima, shaped by the “flame surfacing” design language championed by Chris Bangle. This generation also introduced a high-revving V8 in the M3 — a first and only for the series.
F30 (2011–2018)
The sixth generation marked the introduction of turbocharged and hybrid drivetrains, a GT variant, and the separation of Coupé and Convertible into the 4 Series line. It emphasized customization and brought the 3 Series closer to the luxurious 5 Series.
G20 (2018–present)
Today’s 3 Series blends the heritage of its predecessors with future-ready innovation — advanced connectivity, driver assistance systems, and a range of powertrains including plug-in hybrids and xDrive all-wheel drive. The 3 Series remains a leader in its class.
