Cartier’s Grain de Café Collection Revives An Iconic Motif

Grain de Café collection takes inspiration from the humble coffee bean.

Cartier

Originally introduced by Jeanne Toussaint, Cartier’s Creative Director in 1938, the “coffee bean” motif swiftly captivated hearts in the 1950s and 1960s. Toussaint, recognising its creative potential, crafted it in luxurious yellow gold and noble materials like coral, embellished with diamonds and vibrant stones. Grace Kelly was equally enchanted by this design. For her wedding to Prince Rainier III of Monaco, she received a Grain de Café set. Today, this collection remains an emblem of elegance and sophistication.

Now, the Grain de Café collection makes a contemporary comeback with Elle Fanning as its modern muse. This revival introduces twenty dazzling new pieces that blend classic enchantment with fresh allure. Inspired by Cartier’s signature style, the latest collection celebrates two enduring elements: flora sculpted in yellow gold and the art of elevating the ordinary into the extraordinary.

The Grain de Café collection—featuring rings, pendants, earrings, and brooches—embraces the skin with the warmth of summer. Arranged in clusters, rose gold and engraved obsidian coffee beans sway with each movement, producing a gentle, precious rustle. Their sensual curves, decorated with fiery diamonds set in white gold, radiate exquisite delicacy. In yellow gold, diamonds set in platinum gleam brightly on necklaces, rings, and earrings.

Adding a bold twist, Cartier introduces rubellite beads to rings and bracelets, blending floral and fruity aesthetics. These scattered berries, enhanced with gold nails or diamonds, are paired with engraved gold hemispheres and diamond-studded beans. A standout piece is a necklace displaying two rows of gold beads, accented with coffee beans and gold-studded rubellites.

The collection’s pendants dance with light and shimmer, their movement creating endlessly sparkling clusters. Cartier has crafted hollow grains in two parts—one curved and one arched—to enhance their smooth surfaces and avoid impact. Each element is polished individually to achieve a flawless finish.
